Age of horse when buyign/selling

So a horses official age is its age on 1st of Jan each year.

Is this the age to use when selling/buying...or should actual age be used.....at this time of year for example most horses 6 on jan 1st have actually had their 7th birthdays by June.

No most people do it on the first of Jan but the age they will be that year....so if you were selling a 7 year old in January it may only be 6 at the time but it is still classified as 7

When I buy a horse I like to know its actual age or at the least the month, not the unoffical 1st January age. If the seller can't tell me the actual month then I don't buy.

That is because if I am looking for say a 4 year old because of the 1st Jan thing the horse could actually only be 3yrs old but classed as 4 on the 1st Jan .. See what I mean?
 
Technically you are correct SK - but in showing, for example, the age goes on what age the horse will be during that year no matter what the breed. So if the horse was born in February 2000, it will be the "same age" as a horse born in August 2000. When they are young that can obviously make a massive difference in maturity.

SK - I thought that too - then I read the new manual of horsemanship the other day and it said all horses have their official birthday on 1st Jan, but that they could be described as rising until their birthday has passed...
