age of TB's opposed to other breeds?

do TB's tend to age/break down quicker than other breeds?

what age would you class as a youngster, middle aged in their prime so to speak, and then at what age would you class 'getting old' ?

My friends TB, well 7/8ths, was PTS just over a week ago, he was 29. Had been retired the last 5 years but before that worked very hard all of his life.

To be honest I have only known 5 tbs well.

Monty - my old boy was PTS on Monday at the age of 30ish (miss you bub

Zoom - my ex-polo mare. She is 13 and played high-goal but is showing no signs of excessive wear and tear
Nina - the ex-racer i used to ride. 26 and still buggering off with people

Seb - ex-polo pony that belongs to a friend. 32 and still going strong!!!

So in my experience they seem to last just as long as other horses!!! (discounting little native hairies of course)

very interesting post a friend has a tb thats still doing local shows at 29 im the recent proud owner of a tbxid and was wondering how much of work she could still do shes 15 but has had a hunting lifestyle

I don't think breed has much to do with it (unless you count the relationship between breed and usual use, i.e. racing TB's will break down earlier than non racers 90% of the time) it's more to do with size of the horse. The bigger the horse the smaller (in proportion) their heart is, hence the little ponies living forever and shires generally only getting to mid 20's.

My TB is 20 this year and still acts like a 5 year old! Were still planning on jumping Discoverys this year, however this will probably be his last year BSJA, not just becuase he's getting older but becuase I have my youngster to bring on and I'd rather semi-retire him sound and healthy rather than be forced too. I also think it had something to do with the quality of life they have, my TB is very pampered, well fed and kept fit. I hope he has many more years left in him
