My lovely 6 year old Selle Francais was very very playful (as my instructor called it) with me today. He is usually very well behaved albeit quite fast, Today was dressage. From the minute I got on I knew he was fresher than usual going really fast in trot and canter was very very speedy. I think maybe a little bit down to having spurs on today, can't even usually use a whip with him as he is too sensitve and fast. We were working on demi volts (whats this in english??) and keeping him on the wrong leg. He went mad, he pelted off full speed bucking all the way round the ring. Lucikly I stayed on each time he did it and carried on. I did however take the spurs off as he obviously had no need for them (and trust me I used no pressure with them). He calmed down towards the end and we even managed to get the exercise right, hooray. But he mad me really nervous as instructor said he was going from field to box today so would only get more playful (so to speak) during the winter!! Jumping will be interesting next week, am tempted to lunge him first. Also wanted to go on long hack on own tomorrow (which we often do together), however is this wise if he is highly excitable at mo????

mine's been mad this week too, its either due to having last week off, or the autumn grass sending him wappy. but i like him wappy! he's not been finishing his feed for a few days, prob because they've got too much grass out there.

Sounds like high spirits! Put it out of your mind, it could well have been just a one off, but if it makes you feel a bit safer stick a neck strap on (it helps me!).

Bless him!
As far as I know there isn't really a word in english for a demi-volte, we just call them half circles - at least if I'm thinking of the right thing. In my mind I call them ice cream cones when I'm learning a dressage test!
Having said that I could be completely wrong :D

Will definately leave spurs off tomorrow, tbh only really need them when hes being lazy (so never really)!! Will see how weather is tomorrow to decide if go out alone or not. Quite proud stayed on though, just remember thinking 'must stay on, did not put back protector on today'!!

No, your right. Its when you start a circle but end in the opposite direction, so yes like an ice cream cone!!!
