Out walking on Saturday my dog was threatened by a Jack Russell who went for her with teeth bared, ears back, hackles up etc and really aggressive. This dog was off the lead and and luckily his owner caught up and grabbed him.

Anyway back around the loop ( its a natural trust woods which has tracks in a loop around the car park ) we came across the dog again and again he attacked. I stood between him and my dogs and the dog left but then went for a spaniel who was with an elderly lady with a stick. She was in no position to intervene so again I blocked him.

Anyway the owner caught up and I said she should keep him on a lead as he was aggressive towards others. Her response was that he was small so couldn't do any damage but if my dog retaliated she would report us as my dog is a Bullmastiiff

So if my dog defends herself against a small dog she is automatically the instigator of the ' crime'. Is this correct that just on a size basis the larger dog is the aggressor ?

The lady is an idiot, it doesnt matter how big or small a dog is they all have teeth! Bigger dogs will do more damage due to their size so you are in a difficult position should your dog need to defend itself. I would speak to your local dog warden, if it is agressive they may have had reports previously.

Sounds like an idiot we met who also had an aggressive jack Russell who attacked mine (resulted in a £62 vet fee for antibiotics). This one slipped the lead, twice, and had an elderly owner who couldn't catch it. OH had to pick Bella up to stop her getting hurt more than she did.
He came over to apologise and said that he had one aggressive dog, so got this "friendly" jack Russell from a rescue to calm the other one down, but that backfired and instead this dog had turned aggressive too. So they bought another puppy who's "really well behaved". For now.
Some people are really stupid.

She's a total idiot! The bottom line is if your dog defends itself it'll do a damn sight more damage, cost her a damn sight more money in vets bills and she would be totally responsible! I agree you should report her tho incase something does happen and she tries to blame the other party xx

I have an aggressive JR and he's never allowed off the lead, some people are just plain stupid, If you see them again get her name and address and tell them you will report it
