My step-MIL's pug was badly attacked two days ago by a marauding Great Dane. The dog somehow slipped its choke chain and made straight for them. Apparently, it's not the first time that the dog has attacked. Prince the pug--a total sweetie in every way--suffered bite wounds all over his body and a dislocated knee; the Dane had Prince by the neck, apparently, but its owner managed to drag it off. Thankfully, Prince is on the mend.

Are Danes known for being iffy with other dogs? Or is this simply a case, as per usual, of an incompetent owner?

From my understanding, Danes are known for being gentle giants - both with people and dogs

Ditto ShadowF - however any dog in the wrong hands ...

the fact that it isn't the first time it has attacked...

and it slipped it's lead - ENOUGH SAID!!!!!

Poor Prince- gentle hugs.

They should be gentle as a lamb, going to go with bad owner here.

Hope poor Prince is OK soon *gentle hugs* Can't belive the GD has attacked a dog before and yet wasnt muzzled...

That's what I thought. Stella has played with several Danes at the park and they seem to be, more than many giant breeds, very gentle in their play style.

Fortunately, Prince's best friend is a *huge* American bulldog, so we're hoping that he doesn't develop a fear of large dogs. Poor little guy.

Danes are actually a bit neurotic of all the giant breeds. They are a lot livelier but not nasty dogs. I suspect these two are not exercised and stimulated enough. They are hunting dogs and need to run long and fast. Hazzie hated a friends great dane. It was the nicest, lovliest kindest dog in the world but ohhh so bouncy with a pea brain! Haz didn't do bouncy and would avoid it like the plague.
Glad the little pug will recover but makes me mad to think it was attacked in the first place!

Ohh that sums most of them up soooo perfectly!!!!
They really dont seem to grow up or grow brain at all do they? But they are so very gentle with all the sillyness,it's only a problem if you are wary of big bouncy dogs

Spot on anima! They tend to be clumsy and boisterous but that's all. These two that attacked the pug seem neurotic which is another thing all together!

We had one that was nasty with other dogs.He was sweet as the all are untill he went to training class at 6 months(he was my aunts first GD,she had wolfhounds before) and thought it couldnt hurt.....
Well, poor lad was constantly snapped at by a setter and poodle(just goes to show how silly they really are!

) untill the setter caught him on the bum on day.Our GD bit him back and was frightend agressive with strange dogs fromt then on.
Difference was,we KNEW he diddnt like other dogs so walked him at times we were less likely to meet another dog and muzzled him when out as a precaution.

On the other hand, the harley was typical GD.When my mothers yorkie went for him(and bloody well ment it!) he just looked confused, shock his head and went stright into a play bow -yorkie still hanging off his mouth

Shame he was too stupid to show, would have done very well and we hope to take his daughter out for some fun shows this year, maybe she has a bigger brain because she is a lady?

What a beautiful boy. We tend to see the steel blue ones at our park a lot.

Going off on a tangent, but I cannot fathom why cropped ears are still acceptable in the US. Some of the show BTs are cropped and I think it makes them look mean...

Cropped ears do freak me out slightly I have to say!

Horrid, isn't it? Cane Corso cropping seems to be the most extreme. Poor blighters are left with funny little stubs.

Bostons used to be cropped as a matter of course but it is becoming rarer and rarer a practise for breeders. This photo is of Gerald Ford with his cropped BT, in 1916...

AS a breeder of a number of breeds, not Danes, for over 25 years, I got a Dane 6 years ago. She was wonderful although I knew her mother was, a bit iffy. After 5 years she killed another bitch of mine although ther were some extenuating factors. She was fine before and now lives happily with a male dane. I discovered among Dane rescue experts this was not the first time this kind of thing has occured in the breed although in most cases attacks are not fatal. I still think shewas a wonderful bitch and kept her for 6 months until the right home could be found. ther seem to be some lines with problems but most Danes seem to be gentle giants. I may yet have another one in time. I would be interested to know what colour this Dane was, Pagan was a mismarked rescue but I had her from a puppy. She was mostly black like her mother. Glad to hear the pug's mending. If this dog, as you say has a history of such attacks then the owner needs to get their act together and muzzle or make other exercise arrangments.

Absolutely

Though there is a funky element to it which I quite admire.

LMAO!!!
Maybe there was a reason for it years ago,but it's completly out of place now and personaly I can't think of a breed that looks better for it.

AlskadeLennart, there are a few iffy lines out there, same as any other breed I supose

Both dogs live in a gated community, which means the Dane's owner will subject to the rules of the community, and not just the laws of the land. Not sure what will happen, to be honest.
