Had enough of waiting for response from BE forum so thought I'd try here. I want to use something for my mare when she first starts to come in season i.e. now! She is not difficult so I don't need a 'calming' supplement as such but something that will ease her discomfort. At this time of year she seems to be tender on her back which results in her rushing her fences (she also struggles with her dressage but I find this manageable). I know that she will improve as the summer progresses but she is a handful in sj phase (by the time she goes xc the adrenalin seems to take over a bit and we are going hell for leather anyway) and after eliminating other factors I am quite sure it is discomfort under saddle. Sorry - long and rambling. If I use chaste berry (either by itself of in mare supplement) will I fall outside BE rules? I know rule book states no herbal calmers (although I am fairly sure there will be many falling foul of this one) but will that extend to chaste berry? Would like to use stroppy mare but I think this has velerian which is banned or pure chaste berry, but think this falls in valerian category also??

Vanha12 - I found this chasteberry solution brilliant for my mare's discomfort which was just as you describe. I used it throughout her 5th and 6th spring/summer after which she appeared to "outgrow" her hormonal spells so haven't needed since, (she's now 9).

Have sent you the link but you could also contact Equine America if you want to double check that it's BE legal. There's a facility to contact them on this site.

is it her hormones causing problems or the fact she is getting bit of cistitis (hot wee)? at beginning of season.
there is a homapathic remedy for cistitis that i found helped 1 of our mares with sensitive first few days of season.

Thanks for both these replies - good to know people have same experience. I will check out both. Hadn't thought about the cystitus angle but having suffered it myself (another story!) it you could have a point as it does affect back and kidney area. As for BE, I'm finding it tricky to get answers. Previous advice on webiste is no herbal supplement that either calms or otherwise and vervain is banned. On the other hand when BE members have contacted the manufacturers of these products they have alway assurred them they are legal, so I am sure Equine America will say the same whilst BE will simply troll out the same vague rule! I shall keep on investigating and if I have any luck will post again for anyone else that is confused.
