My big lad was too heavy at the end of the summer... so i planned on using the winter to reduce his considerable girth down to the lean mean munching machine i want him to be.... well we were going well until this week when we have been ice bound... after a week of standing in a stable eating hay i am sure he has doubled in weight and i will be honest its been minus 10 most nights and yep i did rug him with a light weight rug.... mainly because he is in an open stable in a barn that drips water when it starts to "warm up"....

will i ever get him thin and maybe i am wrong but to starve him when all around are being fed ad lib seamed a little harsh especially when we have not been above minus 4 for most days.

aghghgghhghghghgh - he must be the horse version of me !

I dislike fat ponies and try to keep our two just right. Am very narked to find that despite the fields being frozen for 2 weeks and monitoring the hay, somehow, with being ridden less, the NF's girth will not do up on his normal hole because hes put on weight this week!

(doesn't help his companion is a poor do-er and needs feeding up)

It's so tough with these conditions. Is there any practical way you can soak his hay for a few hours somewhere where it won't freeze? Then he can have ad lib hay without his waistline expanding further. Definitely agree he has to eat though otherwise that could lead to other health complications further down the road.

I have the same problem. My lad had almost 3 months of light work in the summer while I was having surgery so he came into winter a little porky. Was just starting to lose it when this weather hit, so now I have to buy an even bigger girth
