My youngster has got 2 ticks on his sheath and after not being gelded too long ago he aint keen on me touching them anyone got any advice i have tried twitching him but it still isn't going to happen and i am worried that they might make him ill. Anyone got any good tips or do i need to make a phone call to the vet?

not a 'normal' method, but when my boy was being really funny about his i got a stick with some cotton wool covered in high pourcentage alcohol on it, then rubbed it on the tick. should kill the tick then it will fall off, or thats what happened with mine!!!

Are you feeding garlic??

You can get an over the counter paste that makes them sleepy (can't think of name). Give him that and then attempt to remove that way, remember though dont pull it off, cover it in Vasiline or get a proper tool to remove it. All else fails, it may have to be a visit from the vet for sedation, and peronal removal!!

I cannot stress this enough:

DO NOT PICK IT OFF!

I have had two horrible pus-y gungey spots (proper impressive stuff with pus squirting everywhere when squeezed *sick face*) on my horse's leg when I did that by trying to cover it in Vaseline etc, not the kind of thing you want in that sensitive place for your horse...

Try and get a tick comb and try that? I know www.ebay.co.uk have some, but that probably won't help as it'll take a while to arrive?

Is there any harm in just leaving it to drop off? I may try this method next time?

Hope pony feels better soon x

I have a special tool but horse aint that impressed by it lol i heared if you leave them on they can put diseases into your horses blood stream!?

Blimey ive never in all the years ive been around horses heard of them having ticks let alone on the sheath!

I agree, try to get a tick comb. You can pick them up from most local pet shops.

Good luck.

I've used frontline dabed on to the end of a cottonwool bud, this will kill the tick and it'll drop off on its own within 24hrs

Switch is fantastic and kills everything ticks lice etc just a small amount applied down the neck and rump and that will be him clear in about a day and it lasts weeks. You will get this from your vet/saddlery shop.

Vet said they will be fine till the end of the week and he will remove them when doing his vaccination!? He must know what hes doing lol

Poor wee chap - adding insult to injury!

Put some Kerosene (parafin) in a spray bottle and spray it on - it will kill the ticks and not hurt the horse. Even household fly spray will work - only thing with that is the hiss of the propellent.
