so i was riding along the road with my little brother and his friend and so my pony wanted to keep up with them so he went flat out and galloped all the way along the road!!!
what can i do to stop him doing that?

Can you get your brother to slow down so they aren't too fast?

Was it actually a gallop (although even cantering is bad for their legs). I'm schooling mine to stop her taking off. She's taken off a couple of times when we've been out - generally because something spooked her - but I am working on getting her to respond to the lightest aid.

nope he wouldnt has to be difficult! grrr
it was deffo gallop! cos h went into canter then there was a noise in the hedge and went into gallop
silly pony "doesnt do" schooling apart frm at pony club

oh dont worry - Your brother will skid over soon enough and that will slow him down
Or is he in a car or something?

Pony side of things - this is almost impossible - i cant blame the poor mite for wanting to keep up! no bit is going to help, even if you stop him running forwards. he isnt exactly going to be walking along calmly!

I would suggest some very strong words with the brother - he must be mad!

(p.s. not meaning to be nasty - but thats what i would say!!!)

hehe he was on a bike and hes only 12 lol i did tell him off but he didnt really understand and later he asked me why horses go slower down hill than a bike!!!

Best I can suggest is getting pony confident hacking on his own so that brother is an 'optional extra' rather than a safety blanket he can't be parted from. Not sure how old you are though so perhaps seek advice from horsey parents/instructor as to where is safest near you to start trying going out by yourselves.

i do normally go out by myself and he is absoultley fine and he is very sensible and confident normally too! im 16 and my parnts arent horsey :( i will ask my insturcto but she is very busy so dont see hervery often just thought i would ask here first

If he's normally fine by himself, then the bike being there, is most likely getting him excited and he wants to stay with it. It's like if you had another horse and it disappeared into the diistance, your boy would want to follow and play catch up.

If you can continue going out with your brother (or a friend with a bike who won't mind slowing down). Gradually let the bike get further and further away so that pony learns to stay in walk regardless of what bike is doing. I would also reccomend half halts. If that isn't working, then as someone above said, turn back to where he is taking off so that he sees he is giving himself more work and not getting anywhere any faster.

Good luck
