Taken before mane was brushed sorry

Mia is my 6 year old dartmoor x pony that i rescued, her mane was already long and i thought it added to her cute features. Now all im hearing is that i should chop that mane as it looks horrible.

All mine apart from the cobs have pulled manes but i cant bring myself to pull hers. If she belonged to you, would you keep it as it is or shorten it? It gets a wee pull every now and then to stop it looking scruffy.
 
I would definatly keep her as a traditoinal if she has a good amount of nice hair alround. i think it looks cute, if it starts to get scruffy you can always carefully tidy it a bit but the good tradtional mares are worth quite a bit of money i recently found out.....so keep it!!!!!!

I'm not keen it makes her look like she's got no neck.

But sh'es not my horse so totally up to you, if you're not showing her it really doesn't matter does it.

i used to ride a traditional cob but when he got sold the new owners chopped his feathers and mane off i hardly even recognised him i was gutted he looked so beautiful pleeese don't you will regret it lol:o
 
Ive got it all the same length now, looks a bit different. Yeap thats her baby at only a month old, shes called Jacada. Mia is 12.3hh and Jacada is 11.1hh already and shes only 3 months!!!

Her mane gets brushed everyday, also i put a leave in conditioner in it so its lovely and soft to touch. When i got her, her mane was so tangled that i thought i was going to have to chop it all off.

She was suppose to be rescued to be rehomed but was never advertised, however shes too small for me to ride comfortably. Ive jumped her over 80cm jumps which she flies over, shes had several beginners on her, my friends wee girl hacked her out! So i know she would be great for a wee child looking to learn or for PC.

She will be sold when Jacada is weaned sobsob, its just that because of that, i dont know whether to pull the mane.
 
i would leave it long but tidy, i like long manes but dont think they should come far past the underside ofr the neck. My old highland had a lovely long mane but i pulled it reglarily to keep it even, its still long but looks loads better all tidy...
 
Hers is longer now, when shes out and the wind blows it goes underneath her neck. Its not hard to keep really, if the newbies feel insecure they grab hold of it lol.

I get loads of compliments about it, but there are just as many saying it should be pulled right up as it makes her look unkept.
 
I love long manes - all my horses have long manes, however I do keep them all tidy and won't allow them to grow longer than the bottom of the neck as I think it starts to look incredibly scruffy then.

If she were mine I'd pull the mane to just above the bottom of the neck.
 
Some of yous might remember that she wasnt a very well girl after having Jacada, we thought we were going to lose her. This was taken the day after she was given her second dose of treatment, as she wasnt well i didnt want to go working around her and stress her out more.

Im heading to the yard soon so will get a picture of her now.
 
My mare has a long mane. It is quite high maintenance. I tidied it a bit as I didnt want it to get tangled in the reins or in hedges etc.

My daughter has a gorgeous three year old coloured cob who has a mane well past his shoulder. I think she would chase you with a 12 bore if you tried to pull, or worse, still hog it
 
I'll be brave (and controversial) and say I think pulled manes look much smarter, I don't like it.

However - your pony, your choice! But if she were mine Id have her plucked and sniped to within an inch of her life

I think that long manes suit heavier horses or horses with a good neck. Otherwise it makes them look a little weak. She would look much smarter with a much shorter mane, however, she is your horse, so you can do as you wish. I will try to find a pic of one of the horses at HOYS last week. Had a mane that went to the floor.
 
I hate to see cobs and natives without their manes and feathers. Also don't like to see them hogged. Leave it alone IMO.
 
I think it could do with a tidy up at the ends. I'm a fan of long manes and tails. Do you brush it? It looks a bit thin to me like its been overbrushed. My little welshie has a long mane like that but I never brush it. If it gets a tangle in it I undo it and about once a year it gets a wash but apart from that I leave it well alone
