AI ADVICE ??

can anyone tell me the exact costs involved in AI,the stallion i'm interested for next year is AI only and i'm seeing what the costs of the vet bit will be.
i know there is;
collection
shipping
and thats all i know ,what does the vet charge for and do you have to have a swab before still and a DNA test afterwards?

any help appreciated

TBH you should contact the stud/importer who deal with that stallion - the cost does seem to vary...... Also contact your vets if you intend to have it done at home, or find a local AI centre/stud that will deal with the whole caboodle for you -but again enquiring about costs.

i have enquired with both but nobody has emailed me back yet so just thought it was worth putting on here.

my vet doesn't do AI v often and apparently this helps ,so i'm going to try to see if a vet in newmarket might.
also wasn't sure what hidden costs as they all add up
other than collection and shipping, & container,

how much sucess have people had with AI too ??

apart from the stud fee it only cost me the return packaging for the equipment as my vet did the AI. I went and collected the semen then posted the parcel back to the stud. The parcel was a polystyrene box, with some syringes and ice packs so nothing major - this was the cheapest and easiest way as i was collecting the semen myself. Think it cost max £10 recorded delivery. Youll have to check with the individual stud with how much courier it is to get the semen to you.
From recollection the package my vets do was: AI, Ebi staying at the vets for 2 days, all her scans before and after the AI was done and her 16 day scan, also the injection as Ebi was injected to come onto season and then the other injection to take her off season once AI had been done. It cost me £350 - i dont think that this was bad . Then i had to pay extra for the October scan - about £25 i think

Hi, my mare was AI'd but I had her done at stud as I was in London for 4 weeks...

It cost me £250 for the full vets package (3 rounds of AI, although she only needed the one) which included all scans etc. I only had to pay £60 for the equitainer to transport the frozen seamen to the stud and the stud fee was £850 but I paid around £910 which included the collection!

Hope that helps... I would recommend getting the full vets package because even though Han only took one attempt, some take three others take two.

My mare went to stud where the stallion stands but they only offer AI, she's been AI'd 3 times now. The first two were unsucessful. There's no extra charge for the actual AI'in it's all in with the stud fee. So far I've had to pay for 3 scans, I got the swabs done by my vet before I sent her off to stud.
FIngers crossed she'll take this time as it's the last attempt for this year.

My mare went to the stud where the stallion stands, but as they only offer AI that is how she was covered. I bought a vet package for £250 that covered everything (she took 2 cycles). Costs on top of that were swabs before she went (done by my own vet) plus stud fee and grass livery at the stud.

Prior to that I had spoken to my own vet who does a lot of AI about having her inseminated at home.

Apparantly unless you have a lot of experience of that sort of thing and know your mare really well, it is difficult to tell when the time to implant is without regular scans. It is common that he would need to see her and scan a couple of times, then send off for the semen with another call for implantation and a couple after that for scans (he scans at 15 and 28 days).

Basically I would be looking at 5 or 6 calls per cycle assuming she had no complications - he told me I should budget about £300 per cycle.

Not too bad if she only needed one cycle (I would have saved on the stud livery fees and got a cheaper stud fee), but obviously if she required more than one cycle it would have worked out a lot more expensive.

Don't know how anyone makes any profit breeding - fortunately that is not why we are doing it.

Personally, I would still send the mare to stud and let them do the AI work for you.

You will have to pay your stud fee and then a collection fee for each time the mare is inseminated.

The benefits to you would be that you have experienced people on site - rather than relying on your rather inexperienced vet.

Having done AI several times, and then ended up having to take my mare to stud anyway - I would most definately send my mare to stud again, even if it was for AI only. Much more convenient - and probably cheaper.

We took our mare to stud to have AI - paid the stallion fee (£650) and the vet fee was £250, which included all swabs and AI and post AI scans. Vet is a specialist who does a lot of work with this particular stud. My mare was in season but "just over" the crucial time when she arrived at stud, so they left her for 5 days and then gave her an injection of prostaglandin to bring her back into season. (All this was included in the package) The advantage of having her at stud was that she was on site for the vet to check daily if necessary; the package for AI at home would have been much more expensive, as it would have included vet visit fees and scans to check on the development of eggs .... I hated her being away from home, but it was definitely worth it from a financial point of view, and also being in an "expert" environment.
