what charges should i expect from the stud and what is the usual going rate for collection and did you have to pay this, not sure all charge for this ?

sorry for 20 questions.
please add any thing else if you think it helps

Well, the stud where my boy stands charge £70 for collection/extending/chilling/packaging etc., plus postage at cost (usually about £15 or so).

I think this is a fairly normal price - about average, according to breeders who used him this year - but tbh I'm not frightfully clued up on rates at other studs, so others on here will know more.

The main thing is to give the stud as much advance notice as possible re when you are likely to need the semen, as in many cases they will need to have a jump-mare in season in order to do the collection.

My boy will now mount his dummy-mare 'on demand', without the need for an in-season jump-mare, but this took a bit of time and training, and earlier in the season the stud manager was driven nuts by breeders suddenly ringing out of the blue at the last minute saying 'We need semen tomorrow'!

I've had charges vary between inclusive in the stud fee to £50, plus postage on top (or sometimes we collect it ourselves to save panic). Each stud will vary in its terms and conditions so its just another question to ask. Also worth checking if they stallion needs a 'jumper' mare or not as if its a small stud with not many mares around, that can make timing quite difficult
