Help, I have a Very poorly pony stallion, who I don't think is going to be around for too much longer. He has sought after breeding and already has produced proven stock and several exports. I want to have some semen collected and frozen for my own use but also have Australian breeders wanting it and am keen to keep my options open to ousiders. However is there any way around him going to an 'approved DEFRA collection centre' to be collected from as he is too ill to travel. I know Eq. reproduction have a mobile service but is it good enough for export purposes?? Can have his CEM / EVA cert done here so what else would be needed? I know we'll need to test freeze as it might not work anyway!

Depends on what is wrong with him, but if he's that ill his sperm count will be pretty poor and might not be of any use. He will also need his swabs and blood tests done before they collect - especially if you are wanting to export. I know Australia has a very strict disease control - we had semen collected off our stallion for export and it was a week or more, even after we had had all the usual swabs and blood tests done, at the AI centre plus finding what his semen froze in before any was collected for storage.
Also is he too ill to cover?, as you will need a jump mare to collect semen so he needs to be able to cover as normal, which maybe be difficult if he's not feeling great! - poor little man!! - a mare might perk him up though!!

There is no way around the export requirements.

Unless his illness has been going on for some time, it may not necessarily have effected his sperm cells yet, and is unlikely to effect his "sperm count". This of course depends on a number of factors and may be effected by drugs used in the treatment of some diseases.

If he can travel, he will need to be at the export station for at least 21 days to have semen ready for export to Australia.

Sorry to hear he is not well. Fingers crossed you are able to make suitable arrangements.
