Airjackets and planes

Want to take my Airjacket with me when I am riding abroad-any ideas whether it should go in hold or hand luggage? Worried about the gas canister but people must take them abroad when they compete? Has anyone got any advice? Thanks!
 
Can you find out what it is in the canister and i will look it up for you in my manuals tomorrow. (I'm cabin crew).

I have a feeling it will be in hand baggage - gas hair curlers and life jackets have to be, but you can't carry a spare cartridge. I doubt it would be allowed in hold luggage as its not pressurised.

I did not know that re gas hair curlers...will remember from now on...
 
I'm rushing around today, but will get back to you. I am 90% certain it will be the same thing as what inflates the emergency life jackets on the aircraft, so will go in hand baggage.
 
It's carbon dioxide, but it's got enough pressure in it to fire a bullet. I'd be extremely surprised if you were allowed to take the cartridge on the plane at all, even Royal Mail won't carry them.

You can unscrew it and leave it at home and buy a new one there, if they are available?

Please check with the airline and get an answer in writing before you go, or you could find yourself held up and being questioned at the airport about why you are carrying an explosive device. It doesn't sound like a gun when it goes off for no reason.

I work in security at Heathrow (im outside on the Control Posts not in the terminals, however the same rules apply for anyone entering the airport regardless whether or not they are flying or simply airport staff or contractors) so our job is basically to look out for anything that goes bang, boom or can cause injury to anyone.
Gas canisters are not permitted as either hold or cabin baggage. Your only option should you wish to take it with you is to apply for a permit to carry it (similar to those who hunt or shoot as a sport and need to carry what are normally classed as prohibited items). Not sure how you go about this as outside my jurisdiction I'm afraid.
Otherwise best you leave yours at home and buy one at your destination as it will more than likely be taken from you at the security check point.
 
Gusbear beat me to it - I'm sure it would be treated like any other potential explosive and would have to go Special.Baggage, if it all. Also regs willdiffer between airlines - I can't imagine a carrier serving the US would it on!

Your best bet of a sure answer would be the airline, with an email you can print out. Or sourcing one at your destination.
 
Ok, for my airline, which is BA, you can bring on a personal lifejacket, with up to four canisters as hand baggage, which I would think is the same thing as an air jacket. If you ever inflate the onboard lifejackets, they go off with a bang and are as quick as an air jacket for riding.

On Heathrow's website it says you can bring a personal self inflating life jacket with two canisters and two spare canisters, as long as YOU HAVE PRIOR APPROVAL FROM THE AIRLINE and the canisters are detachable and comply with the liquid rules for hand luggage, so 100ml or less, and must fit into your clear plastic bag that all your other liquids go in. If the device has pyrotechnic trigger mechanism then it can not be carried in the cabin and you must ask your airline about carrying it in the hold.

So basically speak to your airline for permission but it should be fine. Hope that helps - taken from our safety manual and heathrowairport.com., so security should know this.
 
Honey 08 how can you be cabin crew and not know that the baggage holds are pressurised exactly the same as the cabin:eek:.
In answer to the OP . IATA carriage of dangerous goods regulations permit Avalanch rescue bags with a relief valve to be taken as hand luggage and also lifejackets . They do not mention rider air jackets so technicaly these are banned as handluggage .But ultimately it probably would come down to the pilots discretion. AS hold baggage they should be declared and should be ok. In US and Canadian airspace different rules apply . It is essential to get the airlines written approval well in advance.
 
To be honest Mike, if you stuck your head in one of the chillers where your food trolley is kept, it wouldn't smell much better sometimes!:eek::eek: Actually the holds probably smell better - we often have flowers and fruit as cargo!:D
 
Sadly I know what you mean.I used to work as an aircraft engineer(B1 license). We used to live on what was left in the food lockers during our long exhausting night shifts.
 
I did think about bring my air jacket some years ago. I don't think I would risk bringing the canisters. Why don't you order a couple of canisters whereever you are going, say United States or Germany and have it delivered locally. On your way back, just use them to inflat your jacket (just for the sake of it) so you won't have the same problem...that's what I would do anyway.
 
Yes I could do-I am going to be using it in India so not sure if they have them there. Will have to ring manufacturers and go through it all with them, then speak to airline and get something in writing if they even think it is possible. Either that or get canisters delivered to India!
