I have never quite worked out what Robin does. If he is excited in a field and I ask him to trot he sometimes does his move. He goes up in the air. He is not rearing or bucking. His back is not up. His head dosnt go up. But his whole body goes up! He usually squeals while doing this. He might touch down and go up again but he doesn’t touch down and feel like he is going to bog off. I usually yell “oi” when he does it and he touches down and sort of goes “oh sorry” and we carry on. It’s pure high jinx but it is a long way up when he already it tall! I so wish someone would catch it on camera!

That's how I broke my back! All four legs off the floor like tigger! Doctor reckoned I basically fell from about 10 feet high!

Think yourself lucky he comes down pointed in the same direction. I had one who used to come down facing back the way we'd come, even when following other horses if we weren't going as fast as she wanted ?

I don't know the correct term for it, or even if there is one, but it definitely falls into the "oi, get a grip" catagory!

Robin is 13 so has lost the young horse excuse a while ago. The first time he did it he went on a bit longer and terrified me into not hacking again and taking me a long time to get over that. Now I know he isn’t actually going to dump me!

I call it the VTOL (Vertical Take Off and Landing) - RAF term! It is Alfs signature move, and I have learned not to do anything about it when he does it - telling him off makes him do it more, and higher, and laughing at him makes him do it much more, and much higher!
It's usually very easy to sit, as it's all on the spot but I made the fatal mistake of laughing at him a few years ago, and he promptly added a new element to it - flicked his heels over his ears whilst at the highest point of the VTOL, and fired me so high into the air, that I landed on my feet when I finally came down to earth!
I couldn't decide whether to be very impressed with his athleticism, or very cross that he planted me!

Blue attempted something along those lines the other day, when a stealth cyclist shot up behind us. However, she isn't built for athleticism, so I think she managed about an inch in the air before deciding it was too much effort.

I had one that did that to me. I was just sitting quietly waiting for my sister to get mounted and join me when mine decided to explode of the ground, three bounces to get round and back to where we started, miraculously I was still in place. I was very wary of cantering her for a while because I knew if she did that while we were moving at any speed I would have been off.
