Hello- just wondering if there were any Akhal-Teke owners out there? I have a seven year old Akhal-Teke mare whom I brought back from Russia last year, and would love to hear of anyone who owns a horse of the same breed.

Yes, I have 4 Tekes (2 stallions, 1 mare and 1 3month filly foal. There are a growing number of Tekes in the UK - roughly 40 purebreds at the last count. There are also a couple of organisations associated with the breed. It's nice to hear of another horse, particularly a mare. What is her bloodline and how is she settling in to the UK?

Hiya I have owned an Akhal Teke gelding for 11 years now and he is now a sprightly 21 year old. Bred at the Komsomol stud and of the Gelishikli line.

Is she your first Teke? What do you do with her?

Are you in touch with Sue Waldock or Lorna Winn from the AT Society of GB?

Here is a picture of him when he was a 6 year old stallion.

In their native Turkmenistan they are raced, but they also excel in endurance. Mine did SJ and endurance with previous owners, and I did a bit of everything with him, SJ, XC and then later mainly dressage. He was always excitable and could be a stubborn so and so, but learnt loads from him, especially patience! He is now retired and will be with us for life.

hello everyone- good to see other teke owners/riders out there! I bought my mare, Pelena, from the Stavropol stud in southern Russia. She is directly descended from Gelishikli. She has settled in really well in the U.K., and is loving being turned out every day, which was a real issue when I kept her in Moscow. It took her a while to get used to other people handling her (she is on livery) but she is very relaxed and affectionate now to the people who help look after her on the yard, except for the farrier (whom she tries to kill on a regular basis), or most men. I'm hoping to jump her eventually as she is a very talented jumper but am taking things a step at a time.... She is the first teke I have owned and I have loved every minute of it- she can be difficult at times (tends to throw all her toys out of the pram if she doesn't like something

) but is so clever too and loves her work. She is also very chatty- tends to squeal when she doesn't like something or when she gets over-excited, especially when ridden, I was wondering whether that was a particular teke trait! I will try and upload pics tomorrow! I am indeed in touch with Lorna (who has been marvellous at helping me get her an EU passport).

I have a gelding - pax we have done mainly dressage which he has done really well in and after afiliating him we qualified for the novice regionals and also were on the southern inter reginal team.
This year we have started side saddle which he has done quite well with, hopefuly next year we will be able to do some of the big shows

They are lovely horses, if someone in the UK wanted to buy a teke would you reccomend looking inside or outside the UK? It would also be my first horse of my own, I have worked yards and loaned horses before though. I know that tekes have a reputation for difficulty mainly related to their intelligence. Woul you reccomend one as a first horse for an experienced rider/carer or not?
