Hello, a few days ago my mare developed a small crack and then tonight I noticed just how much it had grown!! I am ringing my farrier in the morning to see if he can come out. Am I overreacting or is it actually quite serious? It looks huge!

however from underneath it does not look as severe:

thanks :)

It looks alarming, but it isn't really. The capsule wall is coming away; your farrier will probably nipper it off, and you will be left with a chunk out of the hoof. It is only cosmetic.

If she is sound I wouldn't worry.

I would probably soak her feet in Milton (or similar) to treat the WLD and thrushy frog :)

As you're organising the farrier to call there's no need to worry, her feet have just got a little long and with the last few days being wet the horn has softened and opened the crack. The farrier will nip off the split, it will leave an upside down V for a while, taking the pressure off the end of the crack. In a couple of trims time it will have gone completely.

Is she sound? Try not to worry too much - you are doing exactly the right thing getting the farrier out pronto.

Yes she's completely sound :) genuine question...how can you tell she has WLD and thrush!? I thought her feet were okay. Panicking now!

If you look at the sole shot, on the left hand side of the photo where thee is the quarter flare, you can see that the WL is stretched. If you take the hoof pickand run it round the WL, if it is furowed and looks anything other than pale yellow/golden, then you can assume WLD. In the crack itsef, you can see on the "leading edge" of the chip off, it looks discoloured? that is where the infection has travelled up the WL weakening lamina bond.

For the frog, you can see that it ooks a little moth eaten around the back? That can be a sign of thrushy infectons.

Don't worry, it isn't bad or anything - but just something to keep an eye on before the muddy weather starts :)

I always thought of white line disease as something drastic! But thanks, very informative :) I've got some pro balance coming any day now as I'm sure it's dietary. She's currently on topspec all in one, and to say how much it costs it's absolute s***!
