Alcohol hock injections

My horse is intermittently lame with bone spavin in one hock, he's had steroid injections which were fairly unsuccessful, he's also had various amounts of rest, light work, bute etc, and is still just as lame as before, so we are now considering alcohol injections. Has anyone had them done before, any good/bad experiences? Would be interested to hear from people who've had them done. Also roughly how much do they cost in relation to normal joint injections?

It's not a happy ending from me :(

I had my 12yo gelding, my best friend PTS on Friday just under a year after the alcohol injections. They worked. His hocks fused in 6 months. However he went onto develop PSD and finally stress fractures - I will never know if the alcohol injections contributed to it - I suspect his movement changed so much after the fusion it caused the other problems.

He did go sound for a few weeks, and he did have spectacularly unfortunate hind leg conformation. I'm not sure if in hindsight whether I would have left alone and managed him with bute (he was retired.)

Sorry to hear that Minigal.

This is one of my concerns as Zara had the alcohol injections approximately 6-7 weeks ago and has just come 100% sound on a straight line, although 1/10th lame on a circle. This is a massive improvement from the 4/10th lame without treatment.

I had the vet out today for her check up and she mentioned the risks but in Zara's case, I didn't really have a choice. Even on four bute a day she remained 4/10th lame before the treatment so I probably would have had her pts anyway so it was worth the risk! I may not be saying that in a year's time if it all goes horribly wrong.
