After watching All the Queen's Horses, I got wondering what is the white rope around the horses neck attaching to the noseband used for in some of the perfomances, such as the Kings Troop??? Its got to have served a purpose of some sort I would have thought surely

If you don't know what I talking about, here a link to a picture I found on the internet (hope it works):

Don't know for sure but I would have thought it would have been to tie the horse up with if the rider needed to dismount for any length of time- only reason I can think of! :)

I think it's tradition - I remember we used to tie our leadropes around our ponies necks when we went out hacking - they're just a great deal posher!

They aren't reins, they are a rope with a buckle that attaches to the ring on the nose band. They are purely for decoration these days but think we were told they were for tying up if ever needed in the old days.
