Algae in water troughs, now sun is out

A yard I was at had a few goldfish in the water troughs to keep them cleaner. They had a piece of guttering in to give them somewhere to shelter.

I don't wash the troughs out that often as my horses seem to prefer dirty water!

Barley straw is recommended for fishponds!

there are some copper discs I think that I spotted last year... will try and find them! ours doesnt autmatically refill so we do let it run down in summer so we can clean, prob takes a couple of weeks to drink down before refilling (and we have to take the fact we are metered into consideration!)

it was these (also in garden centres) http://www.karenruggles.co.uk/other_pages/other_fresha.htm I cant see that they are going to stop algae though

I am not sure if it's the same thing as what the above poster has said, but there is something in the horsey mags (an advert), like a coin type thing you can put in the clean the water... Have a look when your next reading one or if your at a newsagent!

I was also going to suggest goldfish as I have heard this used several times, I would be worried that the horses would drink them though lol :)
