I have a horse who has been competing in shows for a long time and is now 16. However he is increasingly getting more and more tense at shows. Before stopping showing completly with him (which I might have to do if he really doesn't get any better), I would like to try various techniques INCLUDING HERBAL REMEDIES, HOME-MADE CONCOCTIONS ETC...

He's a fussy eater, so I would like to try and hide remedies in home-made horse cookies etc.... Any ideas?

I haven't tried them but you can get syringe calmers for use at shows etc (like wormers).

Seems strange to be getting tense at his age - have you ruled out other factors eg tack, whether he is with a companion or not etc.

Mydaughters pony is a lot calmer if we take her to shows on her own. If we take her with a friend she spends the whole time whinnying to it.
