I was driving home from work yesterday when I saw a very nice grey horse on the road, wearing boots I have never seen before. They fit normally like brushing boots do, but went right up over the knee (if the horse's leg was straight). If the horse came down on its knees, it would have pretty much the same level of protection as if it were wearing knee boots, as far as I could see.

I thought they looked a great idea - was just wondering if anyone else has ever come across them or bought a pair, and what your thoughts are if so? I have a pair of knee boots but have only used them a couple of times as they just never seem to stay in place - so these would be a welcome alternative!

I used to have a Westropp pair, not sure if they still make them. When they wore out I just went back to normal brushing boots though I've never had a horse go down on the road, if I had then I might stick with the combined boots.

I havent either, but having seen a couple of horse who have, it's something I'm always wary of

I have the westropp ones above. I have had them for about 10 years now. They are brilliant. I always had a problem with knee boots slipping down over my boys skinny knees so bought these. Don't regret it for a minute and if anything were to happen to these I would buy another pair in a flash.

I have a westropp pair in FS for sale if anyone is interested. Only used them a few times and bought a cob size pair instead. They are great!

I've never had them but if i did a lot of road work i would buy some, i hate knee boots, they never stay in place and if they do then they seem too tight/ restricting. Have seen these out and about and they seem much more secure and less restricting. Have also seen horses go down on roads and really won't forget it in a while, scary stuff.

They are rubbish, they would stop minor grazes IF they don't bend back on themselves but they would not protect the actual joint from the impact.

My friend used them on her stumbley horse, he fell then rolled back as he moved forward on his knee. He ended up with a hole in his knee the vet had to attempt to stitch. Vet said use actual knee boots designed with a strap below the knee or don't bother.

I had the Westropp ones for my mare, and wouldn't hesitate to buy some again - she only went down on her knee's once in them, but they definately saved some damage. They don't seem to move either which is a bonus! Normal knee boots never seemed to fit on her, and used to fall down unless I did them tight eough to cut circulation (which of course I didn't!) So I would say they're a good buy - think they were called road boots though, it's nearly 10 years since I bought them! My friend now has them, and are in daily use, and look about the same as when I bought them!

I disagree with P.Sparkle, I have used the westropp ones and hav had a horse go down on the road and they did protect him. Obviously there will be the exception, but I reckon they are really really good, certainly not rubbish.

They don't bend back on themselves and are actually very good. This time of year the only drawback is they tend to fill up with grass seeds, insects etc. but are really useful on the more slippery roads in colder weather.

I use the Westropp knee brushing boots ones every time I hack on the roads.

I used to use Jeffries knee boots but they kept slipping down

Haven't had a problem with westropp ones - even on fast hacks with some jumping.

I have a pair of the westropp one’s on my ISH I won’t go out on the road without them on, he hasn’t gone down on the road before but I don’t want to risk it, if you’re going to put a pair of brushing boots on anyway then what the difference in wearing a pair of these, it’s all very well and good saying my horses has never gone down on the road but there is always a chance it could, I have seen what happens when they do and it’s not very nice. They don’t fold over on their self they are actually quite tough but giving enough movement not to restrict the horse and as other’s have said you can do fast work and jumping in them unlike other knee boots. I personally think they’re worth their weight in gold!.

I am a fan, I have the westropp ones for my youngster- bonus is they do not move at all in any pace! I feel they are perfectly adequate at any pace and am confident in them if she went down on her knees.

Thanks for all the replies guys!!! It all seems mostly positive so I will have a look for some next time I'm at the tack shop - would be a good idea for the winter time I think, when roads are slippy and there isnt much off road hacking

I bought a pair of ordinary knee boots for my mare and it didn't matter if I cemented them on her, one canter and they were round her ankles. Then I bought a pair of Westropps and wouldn't ever change. You can also use them in conjunction with overreach boots to make emergency travelling boots.

I've also got the westrop boots for my connie.

I use jeffires knee boots for the warmblood, but he will also be getting a pair of westrops when the knee boots die. they are a lot q.uicker to fit and must be more comfortable for the horse
