Just to let everyone know, patchetts has had to cancel all there events for at least a month as they have had a mild case of strangles diagnosed on the yard, so there are no events running until further notice.

If they have just had test results back he will have been contagious for a while.

Patchetts have been quite quick to act once case was confirmed.

Hopefully no animals are allowd off their yard to compete either.

oh poo!!! Hopefully he did not compete at dressage or jumping so we should be ok?? As long as he stayed in his stable etc... Lets just hope.. I know it can spread through human contact and quick etc... I know many who competed there only a couple of weeks ago... what a shame... I love patchetts!!

I competed there a couple of weeks ago too...I found out becuase I was meant to be doing the BSJA five star performance training there tomorrow but it obviously had to be cancelled because of the strangles!

Hi there,
Its Anna Ross Davies from Patchetts. Just to clarify to we do have a case of strangles at Patchetts that was diagnosed today. I have spent the entire day on the phone to every neighbouring yard and client I can possibly think of to let them know. The horse developed a runny nose last Sunday and was immediatly isolated within an hour of showing its first symptom (as we are always very carefull) It was routinely tested for several possibilities and our vet was very suprised when one week later we had a positive result for strangles as the horse appears to have no symptoms now and, had we not tested it, we would have put it down to a brief virus.
As the Equestrian manager at Patchetts and a competitor myself I felt it was very important that we were totally upfront regarding this matter and as you can see we have closed for the 4 weeks reccomended by our vet. The horse that has contacted strangles has not left the yard at Patchetts for 15 months. He lives on the same yard as my own horses which enter the same isolation proccess as the rest of the yard. No horse will enter or leave Patchetts until we have the all clear.
If anyone would like to ask me any questions regarding this matter please feel free to call or email me. As a horse owner at Patchetts myself I realise that this is a worrying situation and am happy to answer any questions you may have.
Anna

If only more people were as open and welcoming as yourself Anna..... Hopefully it is not too serious for you and will not cause too much disruption. Let us know when you have the all clear as I was planning on coming down to compete and take part in a few clinics.

Anna, Thanks for your update. It's interesting to hear your horses mild symptoms & that no other horse have it. Of my 2 horses, I keep Q on one yard & Spider on another (don't ask- Various reasons!) Spider went off his food & had a high temprature on 1/5. Within a few days I was still concerned & called the vet. He took bloods & suggested he had cold/ sore throat. A few days later I was still concerned as he was trying to eat (& is a real pig!) and couldn't, so I asked for him to be scoped as I thought he might have something stuck in his throat. He went in on 10/5 & there was loads of mucas in his Glutteral pouches so strangles was suspected & a sample taken (he was isolated that night) That was very suprisingly positive for strangles. I say suprising as he is 5yo & had not been off the yard for 4 weeks (apart from hacking) & if I hadn't insisted on him being scoped we wouldn't have known & would also have put it down to a virus. I am 6 weeks into this & thankfully nothing else on our 10 horse yard has gone down with it. However I have no idea where he got it from. He has had an initial bad few weeks, but for the last 4, his temprature has been normal, he has had no snot & has been eating normally, however when tested (scoped on 1/6) he still had absesses in his pouches & still had strangles. He's never had the classic external absesses. He goes back in on thurs, so I'm keeping everything crossed.
As you can see from Spider, strangles is very difficult to detect when mild (& that's how & why it spreads) plus when you think they're better they can still be carrying it & again why it is spread. The only way to know for certain is to scope the horse.
I wouldn't wish what I've been through on anyone( I've had good days & bad days!) The rest of my yard have been very good about being quarenteened for 6 weeks (no one has left the yard) Patchetts are doing the right thing & Anna, I hope your horse recovers quickly & you can return to normal, As I hope I can next week.

sorry to hear that, and how responsible of them, if only all yards were like that.......hope they get back on track soon.

Hi,
We have no idea how this particular horse has contracted strangles. He has not left the yard for 15 months as his owner has been pregnant. We can only think that he must have picked it up in the collecting ring at one of our shows, as he regularly takes part in our show jumping competitions. We will never know for sure but he is a definitly a very unlikely candidate. It is really heartening to hear your positive responses to our straightforward policy regarding this. I felt that we should 'do as we would be done by' and all the team at Patchetts will appreciate your positive comments. Its not been a good day for us and we really hope we will welcome you all back soon.
Anna

Anna

I would like to say well done for being so straight about your outbreak. Our area recently had an outbreak and they weren't at all like your centre. They have been very irresponsible and I'm sure people will stay away from there longer as they weren't striaght to start with.
I hope you get back to business as usual soon

I applaude your attitude Anna, and also feel hugely sorry for what is going to be a massive loss of revenue

Hopefully the horse that brought the strangles onto your yard in the first place is being properly treated and isolated wherever he/she is

Anna, thank you for being so open and honest, I know there are alot of people out there that would try to cover it up but this does not help in the long run. I do hope your horse recovers quickly and that you don't have any more come down with it. Looking forward to you reopening as we'll be down for your next competition. Good luck with it all and I do hope this is just a one off and you can get back to normal soon.

thank you anna for being open about the situation. Im sure people will respect you and Patchetts EC for that.

I was just wondering, should owners be worried about horses that have been to patchetts for competitions over that past week?

Well done Anna for being so open about this. I don't know why people feel the need to cover strangles up. The only way we weill ever get rid of it is by being open of all cases so that we can limit the amount of horses that get it & irradicate it.

Once again well done for being so upfront.
Why there is such a stigma about yards having strangles its done of the owners fault. The only owners at fault are those that dont say anything & carry on as normal.

Hopefully your yard gets the all clear soon.

Anna, thankyou for informing us. Like many have said because of the revenue you will lose some centres may well have kept open for a longer period or kept it quiet. Some I have known to even keep going with their events but just "cornering off" the part of the yard where the horse with strangles was and not even informing people, just saying "dont go over there"!!!

We shall definately be back once the 4 weeks is over... dont think my hubby/friends will appreciate going elsewhere for the next month... no more brie and mushroom baggetts...or latte... ahhhh...soggy sarnies and cold coffee for the next month!! te he!!!

Thanks Anna for letting all know and for being open and honest. Now we have our new lorry we are hoping to get to you a lot more so we will def. be there after the 4 weeks.
