In France that is... It's the rule for all sport horses on January 1st. Regardless of their actual DOB...
Old Boy turned 18 today...Happy Birthday dear boy

As I understand, it's not the same in the UK.
Any thoughts on the French system ?

My old mare was 35 today... & to celebrate, she nearly barged me over when I wanted to catch her (to worm her), & ran off up the field.

And one stallion and a shet on our yard turned 41 today as well... + a couple of others 25 and 28 ! We have quite a few oldies, all doing great and fully retired.

Pen, the 41 yo stallion still has his moments, sired a mare last year after escaping from his field into hers and we all thought he was going to pass out afterwards, he was in such a state but he survived the whole thing. The funny thing is that after his Sj career in Africa, he was used as a stallion that stimulates mares before they get sired (sorry, word in English escapes me...)
What a revenge for the old boy after being denied the real thing all his life !
