How did my life come to this?

I have to say here I was always a bit of a tack snob and have (I think) been brought up in rather an old school way where you did flatwork in a snaffle (I didnt ride in a loose ring until 10 years ago) , jumped in a Pelham, and a saddle cloth was for dressage only.

Boots and bandages were only put on if needed, you had a turnout rug of one thickness for turning out, a summer sheet, jute and a polywarm for inside (wearing all three with a folded wool blanket if cold) and you were posh if you had anything other than a gp saddle. Stirrups were one length for hacking, lengthened two holes for dressage, put up one for show jumping and 2 for cross country.

It is sort of something that has stuck with me through my horsey years.

I have to say I am finding it really difficult to adapt to my new horse’s ‘high maintenance’ way of life.

We now wear the following...

Hacking – GP saddle, snaffle bridle with eggbutt snaffle, sheepskin girth cover over leather girth, sheepskin saddle pad, thin saddle cloth, sheepskin blinkers, sheepskin noseband cover, draw reins. Over reach boots, full set brushing boots. Reflective gear (me and horse) He spooks and rears A LOT so instructor said draw reins are the way to go and they do work. Still a drama though!

Show jumping – Jumping saddle, sheepskin pad, saddle cloth, leather girth, stud guard, studs, sheepskin cheeks, grackle bridle with Waterford snaffle, bit rings, tendon and fetlock boots, O/R boots. Martingale/breastplate combo.

XC – as with jumping, but with elastic bandages

Dressage – Snaffle comfort bridle, hanging cheek French link, dressage saddle, sheepskin pad, saddle cloth. Bandages for warming up.

Showing – as with dressage but with posh show bridle with £50 worth of poncey browband.

I feel VERY silly with all the sheepskin, but he is the most thin skinned horse I have ever sat on – his bridles rub whatever I do with them, as do girths, as do boots – and they all fit, he is just a nightmare.

I have really had to adjust to the fact he actually needs all of these gadgets. So the point of this post is....is there anything your horse has/uses that you need, but make you feel like you have all the gear and no idea.*

Also, is there anything over and above the obvious saddle and bridle that your horse really does not need but has on regardless?

.* please note I have had to buy all the gear but I am not claiming it gives me more of an idea, just more control/happier horse/the ability to sit to a jump/trot etc.

good lord, I thought my mare had alot of stuff, but I'm suprise yours can move!!! For a start I would hate all the tack cleaning!! It is tricky if you have rather a sensitive soul. I do feel a bit of a prat when I lunge my mare in more boots than I would ever use if I were riding her - she generally has a bit of a melly in the lunge ring and I'm not sure she has a very good awareness of her legs are sometimes! She has boots on front and back and over reach boots, just to free school in the lunge ring! Her other extras come in the shape of several fly rugs and a multitude of fly sprays that don't bloomin' work, a couple of bridles because I have a thing for nice leatherwork, and her new saddle!!

Not quite the same... but I buy bridles like some women buy handbags... I have 3 different bridles for my big fella and my little fella has 2 (I also have at least 8 others from previous now dearly departed horses that I keep cos I 'may' one day have a horse that they fit!

Blitz

Oh trust me glos girl I resent it. My other horse has a snaffle bridle and a synthetic gp with a set of woof boots.
Spoiled horse can move, :D but only just!! Just the way I like it with him as when I first had him he had issues with doing all the moves I didnt ask for - including pirouettes, leaps, and bowing (with back legs in the air)
Sheepskin blinkers helped to stop all that and the rest just escalated :D

I have to say that at heart I am an old fashioned horsey gal. I am with you on just the basics. Its must be difficult with such a sensitive soul, and god knows what it must have cost you. I am now going to make you very jealous, this is what my horsey (17 year old Irish cob).

Hacking - snaffle bridle with KK snaffle, hunting breastplate (he is hogged and a bit of a git, so I need my 'FM' strap), Bates VSD saddle and saddle cloth.

Hunting, as above but with Pelham as bit with roundings.

Dressage, as hacking (saddle cloth though is white, not any shade I grab first of all).

I do not possess a pair of boots for him, not even travel ones. He just wont have them on his legs and I have had enough of ripped off shoes whilst travelling, while he tries to rip his travel boots off).

Will have to admit to a fancy rug collection, but thats more down to my shopping habit than my horses needs.

hmmmmmmm, i very much doubt my horse NEEDS 30+ sets of matching bandages and saddlecloths but he copes!!!!!

although star and i jump infrequently at home, and have yet to jump competitively, we still have:

whitaker jump saddle
dead sheep lined jump girth
calfskin stirrup leathers and lightweight stirrups
5 point breatplate(the one thing i genuinely NEED for jumping as without it, saddle ends up all over the shop due to insanely long shoulder blades...)
rolled jumping bridle
dead sheep poll pad
nathe bit
tendon and fetlock boots
matching dead sheep half pad,ear hat, and jumping saddlecloth

and im just about to buy a new hat for me and new show jacket because im determined to get on and do some BN on a ticket over winter and if i buy all the gear im forced to drag my sorry ass out and do it lol!!!

normally for dressage he wears:
elevator flash bridle
dressage saddle
dressage girth
matching bandages and saddlecloth
dead sheep half pad

i suppose for shows i do add uneccesary stuff as he wears a dead sheep gith guard just because it looks nice, and a patent noseband for the same reason.

iv got more dead sheep, bling, and matchyness than you can imagine, its almost at the stage of needing a seperate tack room for it!

my boy doesnt need a lot. we only hack, school occassionally, jump mini pops for fun and will be showing for fun soon. but i just cant stop buying stuff for him. i find it absolutely essential he has matching colours. and for me also! and a change of colours for when i get bored of one set. ebay is my downfall! if its cheap, i buy it. use it once or twice, store it for months, then decide to sell it. and then. oh look i hve money in my paypal account, what shall i buy??? and so on!! i hve to hve everything in tip top condition. recently i noticed a bit of rust on his martingale rings, so new one bought, and in the bin with the old one. but then i did wait 25 yrs to hve my own horse. or thats my excuse anyway!

having recently decided to take him to a local show in sept, i've had a field day as i had no show stuff at all. sexy browband, numnah, new jodhs, jacket, shirt etc etc. plaiting bands, threads, hair gel, show shine, shampoo, clippers, quarter marker stencil. u name it, i got it. now, if he's a prat and puts me off the showing idea, it'll all hve to be sold again!!!! i hve to admit, my horse has more stuff than my kids these days.

Oh dear you guys would think I'm such a skank. I refuse to wear good stuff to ride in, I wear old free t-shirts with lager logos on them from my student days when I worked in a pub. Smart is pulling out one without holes/bleach marks never mind colour co-ordinating.

The ONLY time I've been colour co-ordinated is when I got a free pub top in green and cream quarters that happened to match my hat silk. But I felt too much of a ponce, so now I have a black hat and still wear the top, despite the brewery in question having been bought out over ten years ago!

You sound like me :D except my lager shirts were won in pub quizzes, but same thing. My favourite riding jumpers are my dad's old decorating ones covered in splashes of paint. And my lucky hat silk has faded to white, and is so old and worn out that the plastic of the peak keeps trying to pop out.

my horses do have a lot better gear than me haha i can't help but buy things, especially nice horsey boots :P
Dancer has:
lovett and ricketts lush event saddle
elevator bridle
premier equine boots
pro-equine boots
woof-wear tendon boots
stable chaps

Rowan is bit less off lol but he is only 3! and has
wintec 500 saddle
old mis-matchy bridle
equilibrium white stretch and flex boots
premier equine wraps
stable chaps

whereas i only have my gorgeous champion velvet hat which i love :D

next year hoping to get a nice dressage saddle for rowan and elevator bridle :D

My pony has a GP saddle and a good quality simple snaffle bridle which he wears for everything. He wears four brushing boots for everything to protect his legs. He also wears a nose net during the summer which he does need as he head shakes and this is nearly completely cured by using a nose net!

OOOOOOH dear you're all gunna laugh at me but here goes :p, Ban has;

Ideal Grandee saddle
2x stud girths
1x arthestone girth
John whitaker bridle with BLING browband for shows
JHL bridle with clencher at home
Fly veil
about 5 different saddlecloths
Sheepskin haf pad
Veredus tendon boots
Roma fetlock boots
NEW eventing back boots
2 x pairs premier equine sport / splint boots
Leather & ss tendon & fetlock boots
2X pairs of woof club boots
Magnetic stable wraps

Lord has

Wintec (pukes) saddle
Thorogood girth
JHL bridle & bling
again about 5 saddlecloths
funnel brushing boots
Roma tendon boots
Eskadron fluffy tendon & feltock boots

Its my eer expanding rug collection that will make you all REALLY cringe  :p

He spooks and rears A LOT so instructor said draw reins are the way to go and they do work. Still a drama though!
.

Oh I agree, with that. I looked after and rode a very spooky horse a few years ago who had a rear, and I'd hack out in draw reins too. They were my lifesaver. I never forget the time I took this horse to a show without the draw reins, and sure enough, he went up so high he nearly came over on top of me.

Back to the subject...yes my horsey has a very extensive wardbrobe, all designer too! :D

There are times when I'd swear my horse has a more extensive wardrobe than me. She certainly has more pairs of boots than I do!! I prefer not to think about it too much. She also a rug for every occasion, only 2 turn outs but a whole range of coolers.

Must confess that at the moment I'm struggling to keep up with her washing. So glad I don't use bandages as much as I like the look of them I couldn't cope with the washing and rolling every day

I ride in the same bride and saddle for everything...
But when "everything" means regular hacking with the odd lesson and schooling session I'm not sure that anything more would be needed!

However it is a very very nice made to measure saddle, a gorgeous sabre bridle.

I do have a dead sheep girth cover... but her girth area tends to get sore without it!

I have a huge collection of rugs, 3 of which (LW T/O, MW T/O and thermatex) are used ;)
