For your interest, shall I post a piccy of my brain?

Dizz went slightly left, I went slightly right. Horse did nothing wrong. I did nothing wrong per se. A silly fall. A nothing fall.

Resulted in a bleed on the brain and three months of no riding, driving, etc. That was nine months ago and I still suffer from memory problems and my personality has changed. I am only just getting my nerve back - it's a red letter day if I manage to canter on my horse. My youngest daughter still frets when I ride: she forced her way into the ambulance with me. She's twelve.

Each to their own and all that. Unfortunately, no man is an island. Brought home to me when lying on a bed, with my husband and daughters stood next to me, whilst the consultant discussed drilling a hole in my head.

I was wearing a hat. If I hadn't, I wouldn't be here to annoy the heck out of you all :D

I've just realised I never replied after you sent me the pic.
Unfortunately I couldn't use it in my presentation as it had to be sent off to the exam board, therefore breaking copyright rules.
However that you so much for allowing me the chance to use it.

fwiw I think you should post the pic, it really is a shock and graphic shocks seem to be the most effective.

Yes photos - as a warning/reminder.

I wasn;t riding when I had a head injury. I passed out. Thats all, hit the deck from standing height, didn;t fracture skull or anything (though apparently the wound I had often goes with a fracture...) bruising of the brain, severe memory problems, two weeks in hospital and more pain than I've ever known.

Still affects me (memory wise) to this day 13 yrs on. God knows what it would have been like from horse height poss. at speed!

well said MrsM. piccy please.

Your wish...

The bleed is the lighter part in the bottom left hand quarter (is a swoosh shape). And yup, the middle bit looks like a smile :).

Hear Hear well said it is your choice weather you ride without a hat but it's everyone else who has to pick up the pieces. Glad you had a hat on and are on the mend. Who else is gonna give me a hug and a hot chocie when i've had a bad day. ;) :p :D :D
I lunged Lucy today and then thought it may be fun to have a small bareback session in the school. Lucy is about as safe as you can get a 5yr old rides and jumps her off the leadrein. But i just wouldn't risk riding without a hat, I didn't have a saddle or any reins but i made shore i had a hat on :p :D :D

Yep, well said Mrs. M.

And here's wishing you a continuing recovery and good health for the future.

Not sure if I do or don't want to see the picture!

From a dedicated hat wearer, Faro.

I for one always wear my hat! I value my head and indeed my life as I too have children and a husband that I love dearly! I also sometimes lead my horse wearing my hat if he's having one of his "big scary racehorse" days and also when lunging as you just never know when they might have a spook or misbehave! I believe in freedom of choice and if people choose to ride without a hat on then so be it, but I do find it hard to understand why anyone would want to take the chance. I'm glad to hear you are making a good recovery, but it does go to show that a head injury can have life changing effects. I think you should show your picture.

I had an accident jumping my horse in 1996. I had a correctly fitted, adjusted riding hat on. I was in a sand menage. My horse took off too far away from the jump, landed on it, went down and threw me to the side. My head and shoulder took the impact. I was fine straight afterwards and stood up to brush myself down. An off duty police woman who kept her horse on the livery yard heard about my accident and came over to see if I was okay. She didn't like the look of me (she said afterwards that my pupils were funny and my responses weren't quite right). She took me to hospital in her car. On the way I started talking nonsense and by the time I got there I was fitting, my eyes were rolling in the back of my head and I was coming out with gibberish and kicking and punching everyone in sight, swearing some dreadful obsceneties. I was rushed blue light to a local hospital for a CT scan as they thought I had a bleed on my brain and I was kept in intensive care overnight for observation and on an orthapedic ward for a further five days. I was very lucky I had no bleed or breaks but I couldn't move my arm for a few days due to brusing of the nerves. Afterwards I became exhausted all the time and suffered terrible migraines. I also started having petit mals (small absences due to abnormal electrical activity in the brain). I had trouble remembering things and even now, 14 years on I have trouble taking in information, find difficulty with change, cant remember conversations if there is multiple people relating things, ie person A to person B and then B told C and C told me, by the time I heard what C was saying I would forget who was A and B. I also struggle recognising faces and have to keep making excuses about not seeing people without my glasses on. I have a skull cap with PAS015 spec and the BS spec and I would NEVER ride without a hat on. I was incredibly lucky I got away with what I got away with. About 3 years after my accident a fellow livery rode her sons horse, it bolted with her, she was wearing a borrowed riding hat as she'd left hers at home - it didn't fit correctly, she fell off onto the side of a kerb, she substained a terrible head injury, she was resucitated at the spot she fell, she died twice in the ambulance on teh way to hospital and some two months later, following numerous brain operations passed away.

Do those that still want to ride without hats (so they can eminate the likes of some silly professional riders and look 'cool') still want to ride without hats?

Mrs Mozart was, like me, extremely lucky, but bet she Would never ride without a hat (not that was riding without one when she fell off)!

you mean to say they actually located a brain in there? :D

Joking aside, it's the aftermath on your family and friends leave you behind, I think thats the only thing that will make people think twice and take that extra few minutes digging your hat out, before juming on.

Thanks for all kind words :). I'm a work in progress :)

K - I got the piccy so I had photographic evidence that I do indeed have a brain... (it's just a pity that I've mislaid the instruction booklet) :D

All joking apart folks, it's horrible loosing words and not being able to spell and mixing words up - words are My Thing, they're what I've always worked with, they form a large part of my job (I deal with contracts), so to lose that is bl**dy hard. On a bad day I have to work twice as hard and concentrate a thousand times more than I used to even to remember the basic stuff :(
