I travelled the distance to the Area Festival at Sheepgate on Saturday and was really looking forward to it.

Arrived, warmed up and Otto felt lovely. He was a tiny bit spooky to start with in the indoor school but soon relaxed. Mirrors one end and the constant traffic of people coming in and out at the other end didn't bother him as much as I thought it might have. Oh yeh, there was the initial shock of him seeing himself in the mirrors and realizing again that he's a horse

It was then 10 minutes before our test so we ventured to the outdoor arena where he continued to be responsive, in front of the leg and most importantly behaving himself although he seemed to be getting a little bit stressed as there were a few flies around! So out came the ears.

We were called to the Arena and that's where it all went pear shaped!!!!! Otto saw the line of conifers that surround the large outdoor arena, with a third arena the other side of the trees. HOWEVER it wasn't the conifers he was looking it, it was the legs of the horse in the other arena which could be seen clearly below the neatly pruned tree line!!!! Otto couldn't quite get his head around the fact that these legs had no body attached to them! He spooked, span, and did a fast leg yield from one end to the other all before the bell rang. He almost bolted down the centre line and stopped dead, raised his head and stood like a statue whilst I tried to coax him into some sort of walk.
As my daughter continued to read the test and I could be heard muttering words like
'Jesus' and oh my goodness!! (my daughter laughed as she told me later!
We couldn't even do a simple working trot around a 20 meter circle so I raised my hand is disgust at being the worlds MOST humiliated dressage rider and hung my head in shame, only to hear the judge say ''carry on dear, it will be for the best''

So I struggled through the last parts whilst riding a scared 17.2 wilder beast with an ever growing audience!!!

The Pet Plan test was 'ever so' slightly better in the fact that we actually did all the necessary moves, however crude and awful they might have been.

'Relax Me' powders I bought last week....As useful as a Chocolate Teapot!!!!!!

What am I going to do with this spooky boy??? Any help gratefully received and taken note of. Surely I can't be the only one who rides such a spooky ''I've never seen the world before, lets run for it'' horse?? so what can I do to help him???

Your not the only one to have problems at Sheepgate!! Took my boy a while ago and we were in that third arena! There was someone cutting the hedges in the next field using a tractor and cutter which was far more exciting to watch than listening to me!! Couldn't do a thing with him!!

Phew to know there is someone else out there is a relief. I've watched the video over and over again of the slightly better (lol) 2nd test and it doesn't get any better!

I think it's the worst he's ever been though. Normally it's just one spook and he fells a bit tense.

I wish it wasn't so far or I'd take him back for a lesson!

i think the only way spooky devils is arena miles, be that lessons in diff places, clinics, hire arenas, two shows a week etc etc, get him to as many places as you can.

well ridden, sounds a tough one, sheepgate IS a spooky venue xxx

Oh poor you, bad luck!

I am sure he will get more used to things with time and experience. For what's it's worth I swear by Cool Calm and Collected by Equifeast.

I'm quite scared of legs running around with no bodies on top - you're being unreasonable (;))! Sorry, I'm no help am I :o

I think you're right. I was going to book a lesson with someone new who has to come to me but I think I will ring my other instructor and see if I can get to him and at least that's a trip out somewhere new. I will scan the BD pages to see whats on, this time being more prepared. I will wear dark glasses at new venues just in case he performs like he did at Sheepgate!!

I was also thinking of taking him on some pleasure rides (don't laugh anyone!) I think it's the closest thing to hunting we'll ever get and he will see lots more this way too.
I can see a few expensive months looming

I've not heard of this one but just read up a bit about it on the internet. Would I probably have to order it through my feed stockist?

I went to Sheepgate and spent 4 days up there for the BYRDs Nationals with Bloss (about 4years ago now). She never ever spooks at anything and is always as safe as houses - except for at Sheepgate!! She hated the arenas and spent most of her test time snorting and behaving like a total idiot!

How much hacking out do you do with your horse, and is it always with another horse? If so i would suggest try hacking with someone on foot and then on your own to build up his confidence. He just sounds like he is very much lacking in confidence at the moment.

ETA - i fed my KWPN gelding Equifeast, fantastic stuff - you have to feed a lot for the loading dose but after that it does fet a bit cheaper. I ordered mine direct from Equifeast each time.

This has made me laugh so much! I have been humiliated in a similar fashion many times at sheepgate and it has took nearly 2years worth of trips there to show any hint of a relaxed horse! Dam conifers!!

Around the livery yard is about 70 acres of tracks which we can hack round but it's not much really. I use to hack out on my own quite a lot but then I suppose it just got to the stage when there is always someone who wants to come along. I think it's a good idea to hack him out, sometimes I don't give him enough time out hacking. We have Sherwood Forest within a short driving distance and I've put this on our list to do.
We are off to another venue this weekend coming so that's a new one to try and I'm definitely going to try the pleasure rides :-)

It's comforting to know that there are others out there that don't like Sheepgate either, on their first visits! He is a bit of a clingy horse so I need to toughen him up!

And here was me thinking before we went, how none spooky it appeared to me! lol Sounds like lots of horses are spooky there.

Next time I go there it will be for a lesson or to cut those trees down!

I totally agree with this my mare was a nightmare with all arenas and I was at my wits end, she is on straight magnesium (equine america) and she has learnt to hack alone and now (touch wood) she doesnt spook at all and last time there were flowers and everything!!!
