Ok, so I am being a little naughty and have decided to go see a baby horse tomorrow as a potential 'replacement' for when my current horse reaches retirement (I haven't told him yet though!). It is 15 mths old and currently standing at 15hh apparently. They reckon it will make 16hh - would you say this is about right? I do not know much about growth with youngsters so don't know if this is a correct estimate or if there are other factors to take into account (ie height of parents etc).

His dam is a TB as far as I know but they are unsure with regards to his dad. He is coloured so I suspect his sire was some coloured ISH from what I have been told as he's certainly not a heavy youngster.

Ideall i am looking for a horse to be 16hh-16.2hh max so he sounds about right but what would people's thoughts be?

Thanks!

Yes I should think he'll make at least 16hh. They usually grow a hand after they are 2 yrs. It's hard to tell without knowing the height parents.though.

Thank you all! He is a little younger than I was looking for, was more going for a 2 to 3 yo but I thought he was worth a look as i think he'll be about the right build. I may start with a little in hand showing (never done that before) but the hope is for something that wants to do a bit of jumping/eventing to at least decent RC level. If he proved to be better than that all good and well! Think I like the fact he's not go too much white as well - less to clean!!!

i seen his ad a few days ago and thought what a lovely looking wee horse, think he'll make at least the height you want, i love his colour to! best of luck :) x

I know someone who has a yearling much smaller than that and has been told it would make at least 16hh !Yours looks more likely

forgot to say my knabstrupper x tb was 14.2hh last yr as a yrling, this yr he was 15.1hh as a 2yr old and i expect him o make 16hh his dad was 16.2hh and his mum 15.3hh ish

Ye the other day my yearling who is 14.1 you guys all told me she'd make 16.2....! I think that horse is gonna be HUGE!

Oh god don't say that, i don't want a HUGE horse! Lol. then again, to be honest if the horse has the right temperament and does what I want it to do then I don't think it really matters, I am just used to riding my 16hh!

At 15 hh as a yearling I would expect him to easily make, and most probably exceed, 16 hh. Various things can affect final height such as as is he a first foal for the mare, etc. I have also found that with TB you can get a 'throw back' from a couple of generations earlier.

A friend of mine hoped to breed a show hack from her 15.1 hh TB mare, sent her to a pony stallion and ended up with a 17 hh four year old!
