Allen and Page Calm and Condition feed

Similar to a previous post really, about certain conditioning feeds sending horses loopy.

I was just wondering if anyone has any views on Allen and Page Calm and Condition please? Have bought a bag this weekend and will prob start it mid week, but just wonder if anyone has had good or bad experiences. I know feed is relative to work load etc, but just wondering.

I have fed this since they stopped selling ultra calm as UC was the only feed that kept weight on my mare and kept her sane. I was recommended A&P when they stopped this and have used it on all my horses including the one I have now and find it does put weight on with out the fizz and having always having TBs that is important to me.

Love this feed, mine has been on it all winter and felt really good on it. Have changed to the power and performance now as its the next one up, as he is working harder, but he looked great on C+C, Alfa Oil and Speedibeet. Love Allen and Page feeds anyway. Can make them a little bit sharp depending how they react to Maize.

I've had mine on C&C for about 8 months now. He's also on Alphabeet, Alpha A Oil and Micronized Linseed.

I had problems with Dodson and Horrell Build-up and also Baileys No.1 cooked cereal meal. They both sent him ca-ray-zee! He's fine and sane on the C&C.

If its the C&C without the barely, always used it, doesnt effect his energy levels at all or attitude to work at all, fed with sugar beat and Alfa A oil, a great little combo for horses on light work but also needing condition.

I have fed C&C to one of my lads for over a year and it suits him very well, with my other lad it was no good, i think it depends on the indvidual animal as with all things, but i think it is an excellent feed would be loathed to take him off it

Whether it sends your horse loopy depends on how sensitive your horse is to starch and whether he reacts to certain cereals. C&C is barley and oat free, but does contain maize. Starch content is 19% starch (I think, from memory) so higher than something like Spiller's Conditioning Cubes (12%), but not as high as some of the very cereal-based conditioning feeds.

It seems to suit lots of horses, but on previous threads a few forum users have reported it fizzed their horses up.

Both mine are on it and have been since dec as the new yard deals direct.Its the only feed my new mare can eat without being completely loopy she is tbx and very anxious.My tb who is coming back into work is on it as well and hes completely bomb proof on this feed.The only thing you need to remember is that it needs 10 min soak like kwik beet.Highly recommended for nutty horses lol

Ive not tried this but thought I'd mention the Allen & Page Quiet Mix, tried the Quiet Pencils a few years ago, gave them up, then tried the Quiet Mix about 18 months ago on my hyper section D, the feed made him virtually unrideable, had to put a parachute on before I got on board!!! He's now on that new Spillers Competition Mix would you believe, my God what a transformation, he's lovely, work that one out!!!!!! Like someone said, depends on what suits I suppose.

Thanks for that bit of info, as I said I have fed it for years and I just wet my feeds Iread your post and googled this as I read the bag once when I first started feeding it and there was no mention of this. When I googled it there was no mention of it on there website but arab forum came up so had a nose at that, there were lots of replys from people like me saying they just wet feed but lots of replys stating that it never used to say soak it and now they have changed packaging to tell you to soak and lots have had problems with there horses by not soaking it So thank you I will be soaking in future.

Its good stuff. Does what it says on the bag. Minto is on it, as is my 35yo, and my old 5yo also on it. All with good results. Minto can get fizzy on fresh air but he is much better on the C and C

I've started using this since Jan as my young mare had turned into a monster, and its shown good results, she has kept the weight on, and is better behaved with it.
Also now have my tb on it and suits her fine.

You will soon realise once you have done first soak it really swells so goodness knows what it would do in the gut.Hope it works for you

Awesome feed. I would never feed anything else. C&C with Alpha Beet and some chaff - recipe for a happy, healthy, sensible pony

You can feed it soaked or dry though because it doesn't really swell a huge amount when mixed with water, no where near like how sugar beet does. It is purely personal question and not dangerous if fed dry. I always have fed it dry.

It only takes about 5 minutes if that to soak right through if you wish.

I'd have to agree with Cellie (sorry if spelling wrong)
My horse got choke from bolting it down and not having his soaked didn't help. It was terrifying just how much it swelled up. He had choke for just over two days and was tubed about 3/4 times (may have been more, it was last year so can't recall) over the course of 2 days and ended up being hours away from a general anaesthetic and surgery to try clear it. Seeing the volume of C&C that came out the tube was scary so I soaked it from then on (I hadn't been told and it wasn't on the bag advising you to) It might not swell to the extent of sugar beet but it does go twice the size I'd say

I'd never feed it dry knowing what it did to Mr D.
