hi i know this isnt supposed to hot them up but has anyone found that it does i feed this and handfull of chop twice and adlib hay any suggestions on other feed to keep condition without hotting up thanks
Hi,
I had my girl on this to get some condition on. I fed it with alpha a oil, and sometimes some extra speedibeet (although c&c is mainly sugar beet anyway). If you need more then you could add some oil to the feed too? Instead of hay you could feed adlib haylage instead? None of this caused my mare to heat up so hopefully would be fine, though they do all like to act differently!
It has much higher starch than some other feeds, so if starch affects your horse then yes, it will still hot it up.
Unmollassed sugar beet, alfalfa and topspec conditioning nuts are all very low starch and will help put weight on if fed at a higher level than the horse requires for maintenance.
Although Calm & Condition is advertised as barley and oat-free, it is not actually cereal free as it contains maize, which can fizz up susceptible horses.
You could consider various alternatives:
1. A combination of non-cereal straights (eg AlfaA Oil with Speedibeet) with a vit/min supplement or balancer. Other possible non-cereal straights are dried grass products (Readigrass, Graze-On, grass nuts) and oils sources such as linseed or high oil supplements such as Outshine or Equijewel.
2. Spiller's Response Slow Release Cubes fed with Alfa A Oil.
3. Top Spec balancer/supplement with Top Spec Cool Condition Cubes.
I've had huge success with, and consequently swear by, C+C so perhaps I'm biased
but I've often wondered if the horses who seem to get 'hot' on it, are actually just naturally hot blooded creatures and have their joie de vivre back?
I'm geninely not having a pop at OP, just wondering if it is feasible that the horse is 'feeling well' and so acting it? Answers on a postcard please
I used to have a TB who needed help to stay covered and I used to give him baileys no4 its a bit like flour and was the only thing in 22 years that kept him well I fed it with sugar beet and alpha a oil. They are all different but you will find the answer through trial and error.
