Anybody any experience - my Tb is starting to look a bit light after 24/7 turnout in paddock (vets orders must have 3 weeks out).

He is already on 2 hard feeds of Baileys No 4 Cond. Cubes, Allen and Page Calm and Conition and Chaff and also 2 tub trugs of readigrass on an night time.

We are not allowed hay in the field.

Try putting a rug on at night??? mine are out 24/7 and it is chilly at night (and in the day too when it's been hammering with rain)

I prefered A+P calm and cond - weight gain mix is heavily barley orientated. I found Baileys sent my large warmblood off his head - my farrier confirmed that this was not uncommon!

Alfa Oil may help instead of chaff? I personally would stick with one manufacturer and maybe phone their helpline for advice on quantities etc. Mine didn't like the C+C on it's own - maybe it tastes a bit bland??? they liked some beet or mix or preferably both (!!) with chaff/readigrass with it or even some molasses if he is OK with sugar?

If TB still losing weight, unless he is doing enormous amounts of exercise he is either a) cold or b) got something else going on (teeth?? is he a worrier? pain somewhere?)

Good luck!

Hes a cribber/windsucker and only puts a good weight on in the summer when grazed in our massive 25 acre field. He is recovering from an operation and 2 months box rest so lost the weight (and lots of muscle) then.

hes a fussy eater and hates Alfa Oil (so those things are no good)- the only chaff he likes is either showshine, the apple one or herbal!!! Hes fine on the Baileys No 4, think i will try some alfa beet - doesnt mind when the alfas in there (he gets this in the winter).

try an oil based feed, cereals create more gastric acid which can then lead to windsucking. winergy, dengie, simple systems are all fibrebased

try put a duvet cover under a rug with a surcingle to hold heat in a possibly put corn oil to his feed you could try he weight gain mix and see how he goes on it but just introduce it slowly on both weightgain mix and corn oil

Changing the chaff to AlfaBeet sounds a good idea if you know he likes it. You could mix some oil or an oil-based supplement (like Outshine or EquiJewel) into the AlfaBeet to add extra calories too, but introduce this gradually if he is a bit fussy! I use veg oil myself, but fussy horses don't always like straight oil, so if this is the case then Outshine might be better, although more costly!

I'd make sure that his teeth have been checked too, to ensure he is getting the most out of his feed, and echo the suggestion about rugging. Is he on his own in the paddock or with others? If on his own is he settled, because if he is stressed and fence-walking then obviously he will burn off valuable calories.
