Mt TB mare has dropped weight this week. I have put her on Allen & Page Weight Gain (and Chaff) to see how she goes.

Anyone got any opinions on this feed?

yes weve tried it when it first came on the market was aready using the calm and condition, having switched from D&H competition mix, would say improved condition on the calm & condition from the CM but no difference with the WG.... if any of the horses on the yard start to loose weight our check list is, when and with what chemical were they last wormed, has there been a drop in temperature, if yes then is it time to change or add a layer of clothing. Has the workload increased, are they being given enough haylage to last through the night if not top up again at 10pm. Increase quantity of oil anything up to 1 litre per day split into four feeds for horses on a major recovery diet, little and often for the stabled horses. However when it comes to weight gain there is no better product on the market than Baileys No 4 for me, every horse that we have ever had a problem with has always maintained/recovered on it rapidly.
pellets dont look as appealing as mixes but mixes sell better because they look more attractive to us but not necessarily whats best for the horses digetsive system. Pellets are more easily digested than a mix and to be honest that's why I think you get such fast results with Baileys number four. Good old fashioned stout can also be added its an old remedy but theres a lot to be said for yeast. If we need to establish muscle and stamina in the hunters and competition horses we also whisk up calf milk and a couple of eggs. Our boss is really old school with his methods but have seen horses bought in from the sales recover from being skeletons to top hunter condition in just a few months. The worst cases get very small feeds every hour or so with adlib forrage at all times.

She' been on Bailey's for years. Its not good to her in the winter. I am hoping the Weight Gain might help her out. Its trial and error I guess.

I've used Weight Gain in the past and thought it was quite effective.

I also think sugar beet is a good feed to help keep condition during the cold and wet.

We used this on my sister's underweight 4 year old when we first got him and it worked a treat!!! Did seem to make his wee stink rather (think it's due to the protein in it) but he improved no end in weight and condition.

Ooh, also - how old is she? We fed our oldies on A&P Old Faithful for a time and this really kept the weight on them well.

Super news on your 4 yr old! My mare is 19 - she's dropped quite a bit this week - not unusual though - she tends to do that all of a sudden sometimes. It really upsets me to see her like that which is why she is going on a full on feeding plan.

The Old Faithful may work well with her then. It was probably too good for my 22 yo pony (he holds weight well) but worked great for his 24yo TB companion.
