Hi my friends horse is on a diet and he has been eating his straw, we are going to out him on shavings today but he has come out in a rash all over his skin. I was just wondering if anyone knew if they can have a reaction to eating straw?

What type of straw is it? My boy is allergic to barley and did react quite badly when stabled on it - even without eating it!
(This was before we knew about the allergy, obviously...

Im really not sure what type it is. He has been on it all winter with no reaction its only since he started to eat it!

Hi,

What's the rash like? I was just about to post about a similar problem. Sunday morning I peeled back my horses rug to find him covered in lumps. I've had him for 9 years and it hasn't happened before, he his quite a hot horse but being clipped out and just wearing 1 heavy weight rug over night I didn't think he would be massively hot. The only change he has had is that I have started soaking his hay as he has been coughing a bit, however I think that is more due to munching straw (wheat). All the searching I have done shows up heat, flies (not likely), random allergies to food changes, too much protein, washing power allergies as the main culprits. I'm wondering about protein as the others don't seem likely (apart from maybe heat) and the grass is definitely springing up. Just hope it goes soon, show season is just round the corner!

Its like small lumps all over his clipped skin. He is quite a hot horse too and wears a med weight rug at night. The rash has gone down a little today so fingers crossed its clearing up! I hope yours clears up soon too.
