Hi there,

My normally excitable greyhound was completely floored yesterday morning on our walk. He jumped out of the car, wee'd in a bush (a combination of nettles and rosa canina) and within three minutes could barely walk. His eyes were glazed, no appetite (which is unheard of) and he was unsteady on his feet. I took him straight to the vets and his temperature was through the roof so he had to be put on a drip and lots of tests done. Nothing odd came back so they're putting it down to an allergic reaction. I figured it must be the rosa canina or the nettles. Does anyone else's dogs have reactions like this to shrubbery or insect bites?? He had no lumps or bumps on him either.

Thanks for reading.

sophorix shenckii - Sporotrichosis (rose thorn or rose growers disease). A bacterium that enteres the body through a rose thorn. Or even from moss, hay, soil. Unusual to have such a quick reaction though, normally the site will swell dramatically. People have died from it. Also I heard of a dog not so long ago who died young and suddenly, the PM revealed a rose thorn embeded in his gut wall and the bacterium caused the death.

Maybe it was a combination of the nettles and the thorns that caused a sudden and severe histamine reaction in his body?

Our dog doesnt have such violent reactions, but there is def something she is allergic to out on the walk. She will get streaming eyes, slightly swollen face and has to be given steroids at times to bring the swelling down. Being a Shar Pei, the swelling creates entropian so we have to stay on top of things.

Piriton doesnt seem to work, neither do any of the other doggy friendly anti histamines.

I hope you dont have another reaction like that again, it does sound very scary.

All the best for your friend x

Interesting about the rose growers disease!! I'm going to look that up now. I'll keep him away from that site from now on and hope that it doesn't happen again. Maybe you're right about the nettles and rose at the same time. He is a very sensitive lamb bless him. Thanks very much for the information : )

My springer once went funny out on a walk then collapsed at home, was sick etc OH didn't see what had happened but not sure if she was stung or she ate something or maybe weedkiller had been sprayed somewhere, she was zonked for a day or so.

Once or twice after that I noticed her going a bit funny after she'd walked through clover and some weeds on the verge, not sure what is was really. Hasn't happened since but I've noticed yellow appearing around the edges of the verges so I hope they haven't been sprayed with something by the council, if someone has they should put up a sign
