Last Monday my horse came in with a very swollen head. Jaw line, lower lip and underneath of head. We first of all thought it was a bite or sting but after a few days it didnt disappear. The vet came and looked at him and said it was a severe allergic reaction to something he is eating. None of his hard feed has been changed, he is in the same field he always has been, and his hay is from the same batch. We have since kept him in, and swelling has 90% gone. Problem is as soon as he goes out in the field he swells up! Vet reckons it is the plant protein in the grass!!!!!! So we have now had to section a tiny amount of grass for him and he can only go out for an hour a day. Slowly we will increase this until he is ok. In all my years with horses I have never heard of this. Has anyone else experienced anything similar?????

My girl always reacts to this when turned out on a new field.

We moved on Sat and she was out in a bare field with hardly any grass but still came in with swollen grass glands.

They usually go down over night though.

has somone fed him something different . treats ect . Has the fields been sprayed ???? Is there anything growing next to your fields???

My old Appy used to do this every spring, regardless of how long she had lived on that land. Guess what, the younger Appy does it as well! I have reached the conclusion that like me they are allergic to tree pollen and we all just have to put up with it.
