My horse has come up in lumps to her newly washed rug!
i've had the vet out to give her an injection but i wondered if it would be unreasonable to ask for the rug women to pay for the vet bill and my money back cos obviously it hasn't been done right as she has never gone lumpy before!
opinions welcome

Err, Personally I don't think your rug lady will cover the cost of your vets bill and or give you a refund. Have you used her before and do you know if the washing product has been changed?

It might be a coincidence that your horse has had a reaction to it's clean rug but with out doing allergy tests, there is no way of knowing.

You can always try asking her though but good luck!!

My horse didnt come up in lumps but i had a rug washed at the yard and as soon as the rug came off she would keep itching on the same spot on her side, she would do it when i untacked and also sometimes when i was leading her to the field, the only thing i can think it was, was the rug, i hibiscrubbed her side for a few days and then all was fine. You may have to have an allergy test done to prove that it was the rug and this may cost more and if it isnt the rug you would have to pay it. It might be worth talking to the rug lady to see what was used so you can avoid it in the future and she may offer your money back or a free wash, i know if it was my business i wouldnt pay the vet bills unless i knew for sure that it was my fault!

You could ask what they used to wash your rug in - I very much doubt that your horse would get a reaction to the proprietry products normally used. Has the horse had a reaction before to a newly washed rug, and if so what product was used? If proprietry products were used to wash rug I very much doubt you'd get the cleaning company to re-imburse the cost of the vet! And if the horse had a reaction in the past, you should have told the company this, and what had caused the reaction. Sorry, this sounds really harsh, but it isn't meant to be - just rushing (am supposed to be working!)

I would be very surprised if your horse was allergic to the proper products used to wash rugs, eg Nuumed wash or Nikwax wash. They are made specificially for horses and tested so that even those that suffer sweetitch are ok with them. Has domestic wash powder been used instead to wash your rug.? If so that could be your answer. Horses also can have allergic reactions when having been clipped. A horse on my yard does every time, has hives appear on his body.

As others have said, I'd be surprised if it was the washing product. Don't forget that horses have a thick layer of hair between the rug and the skin. It's more likely to be an issue with the rug itself rather than what it was washed in. For example, the poster who said her horse rubbed and rubbed when the rug came off, I'd have turned the rug inside out and checked all the seams etc. You know how awful it is if there's a bit of eg stiff label scratching you in your undies, well it'll be the same or worse for a horse as he hasn't got arms to reach to scratch underneath the rug. The relief must be enormous when the rug finally comes off! Check the rug isn't making the horse too hot - 12 hours or more sweating like stink under a too-heavy rug is more likely to cause a rash! Then check all the seams, binding, places where the straps are stitched on, any repairs etc etc etc. Press hard with your hand so you can feel what the horse would feel.

Doubt you'd be entitiled to a refundbut def worth checking what rug was washed in to avoid it in future - my older horse is allergic to any washing products other than Nixwax (sp) or Woolite and comes up in urticaria all over within half hour of wearing them. Also allergic to shamppos (even horse ones) so use Johnson's baby or boots baby only.

His reactions are so severe he has to have steroid jab asap and course of prednisolone

This thread came up in my Google search today, I think my horse may be allergic to Nikwax!

We had our rugs washed, and until last week she was in a new rug. When I clipped her she started to wear her newly cleaned heavyweight ever since she as been really strange!

Twitchy when I put her rug on which I thought was just cos it was cold inside, then she kept rolling in stable ad I thought she had a bit of colic.

She as been really wired and then quite sulky and seems to love me touching her when her rug is off- shes also been escaping out of field all week!

I washed her off today and her temp is slightly raised 38.8

Going to try her in one of her old rugs for a bit to see if that helps.

The only other thing i can think of is the clipper oil is it different to normal , only one of my liveries seems allergic to certain clipper oils
