Hi

My poor horse developed a rash all over her, mainly over her shoulders, up her neck, over withers but everywhere really. it was like a nettle rash and really itchy.

I discovered it got worse when in the stable at night and better during the day out in the field

So I called the vet on monday and he prescribed 25 piriton tables twice a day. The rash got better that day but over night in the stable it got worse again. So the following night I left her out and the rash went away

I kept up with the piriton for another day then stopped yesterday. But last night when I went to check on her and get my pony in she had the hugest lump on her neck

I was about 5 inches across and 10 inches down and about 3/4 rasied off the skin!!! I'm guessing a sting or a bite and have given her 2 lots of piriton today and rang the vet who i am waiting to call me back but has anyone got any ideas what on earth is happening to my poor baby???

We are having a lot of bumps that then weep and crust over. I suspect a fly of sorts. Funnily not all ponies are getting this just a few, namely my 2 chestnuts one of which is turned out in a fly sheet so I also suspect that they are being bitten in their stables at night. Have been treating the areas with Tea Tree mist which seems to be working.

give her a good bath in a product called lavender bath by barrier that will cool soothe and protect see if that works if it dont call your vet for some advice!

We have a pony with terrible allergy problems and nothing has helped him - he sometimes gets lumps on his neck and jaw area which just seem to randomly come and go. Sorry I can't be of much help. Our vet did say that antihistamines don't work effectively in horses and didn't prescribe them.
Did you just use human piriton tablets and how did you feed them? Am desperate to try anything on mine!!

Hi yes they are just normal Piriton tablets, I got them from the vet in a tub of 500 but i have seen this tub on the internet for about £12.00

He said to feed her 25 tablets twice a day so 50 tablets a day!!! she is 15hh and weighs roughly 480kg. (he said I could up this to 75 a day if 50 were not working).

She just eats then in her normal hard feed (happy hoof) but then she will eat anything in it (even paste wormer squirted in!!!!!!!!) but i don't think they taste horrid.

My mare also has lumps under her jaw and around her cheek bone area and always has done and I put it down to the grass in the summer as they go away more during the winter, these lummps do not itch thou.
