Allergy test results

got our ponys allergy test results today and she seems to be allergic to sugarbeet, mosquitos (sp), orchard grass and soil. mostly things we can't control

. hopefully she will be less grumpy once she starts her injections
 
What's involved in an allergy test for horses and how many things did you test for? My filly has an on-going allergy problem so I'd love to pick your brains. What happens when she comes into contact with something she is allergic to.

Interestingly I have heard that a lot of horses are developing allergies/sensitivities to sugar beet - especially this winter.

HUGE apologies if there are been previous postings on this but I've only recently come across the problem with my filly.
 
the vet injected 33 different things into her neck, dont know exactly each one i assume they use the same on every horse. he then had to come back a couple of hours later and the next day to measure how big any lumps were. there are other ways to test for allergies but this seems to have worked for us.
she gets itchy, comes up in small lumps and starts biteing and kicking when it its irritating her.

i wonder why there are more allergic to sugar beet or maybe more people are testing now

thats what i thought, she has to have injections now i assume for the rest of her life, how often depends on how well she reacts. hopefully she will be happier
 
ive had test done on a horse, vet took blood and sent it away, if you want to see the report drop me your email. what he was allergic to was amazing.. grasses, dust, pollens, feeds, you name he was allergic!

I had allergy tests done on my horse, he was allergic to allsorts too.

The treatment made him twice as bad as I was told it would initially but he never got any better so I stopped the treatment.

Treatment doesnt always work!!!! Be warned.
 
my mare is allergic to most you mention plus more. she has been on injections-she is only 5. PM me if you like and i'll give you my expierance s/thoughts/ideas.x
 
I didn't think that treatment had to continue forever, thought it consisted of increased quantities of the allergen to try and retrain the system?? Only remember this from people though so poss wrong
 
iv been told by the vet she has to have injections every 2 days for a month then 1 a week for a month then every 2 weeks and then every 21 days.
haven't been told for how long she will be having them every 21 days just assuming atm
 
Sorry if you've posted this already but...

What prompted you to look into allergies in the first place - was it behavioural or physical changes or both? How long did you put up with any changes before involving the vet?
 
we have had her nearly 2 years, she showed what we thought at the time were symptoms of sweet itch so brought fly rug lotions etc which didnt work, she also gets very itchy, has small lumps/scabs and gets very grumpy biteing and kicking when like this. we spoke to the vet and tried to ruled some things out before allergy testing. recently she nearly bit the vet so she suggested the allergy test as it was obviously very irritating for her.
 
I had the blood test done as my boy was so itchy. It came back with loads of things, low risk, medium and high. Among them were red clover, wheat alfalfa, red ant, all sorts of different flies etc etc. I didnt have the injections but did cut out what I could but it hasnt made a difference. His itching is seasonal, more winter though.
 
my horse is about to go off to newmarket to have the allergy testing done. how long did your horse have to stay in for? and also what was the rough cost if you dont mid me asking?
glad yours has come back with something...hope you can get ot sorted now!
 
our mare stayed at home the vet came out in the morning to inject 33 different things then came back in afternoon to measure any lumps then 24 hrs later to take final measurements. results were sent to specialist and got results a week later. cost £380 including call out fees and sedation. as they sedate to do the injections as there is so many.
hope things work out with your horse and the allergy test
