Allergy testing results

My horse has been having suspected allergy problems for 6 months now, and has just been to Rossdales in newmarket to have the testing done with Janet Littlewood.

Have found out that she is allergic to dust and forage mites, feathers, mice, slightly to insect bites, and to some weed pollens.

Vet has suggested turning her out to see if that helps, so she is out for a months trial to see if all the itching stops. she is also having 150ml of aloe vera juice in her feed daily, is on steroids (750mg/day), and horsehage in the field at night time.

Also have ordered the immunotherapy vaccines.

1 Does anyone have any ideas of any other herbs that may help her? dont really want to get some herbal vet out and pay £250 for something i dont really belive in! I am, however now willing to give anything a try now!

2. Has anyone had any experiences with the immunotherapy vaccines? and how sucessful where they?

3. Has anyone had a problems with ling term steroid use? Shes having 750mg of Prednisolone a day now. Also cost of steroids, have just paid £117 for 9 days supply, if this terns into a long term thing this is going to work out very expensive! vet will write me a perscription, but its not really any cheaper to get them from the chemist, any other ideas?

I am considering the vaccines myself.
The only problem is that they can only vaccinate for up to 8 items and they found 15 triggers!
At the RVC they told me it can be up to 9 months before you even know if they've worked and results are patchy. They encouraged to concentrate on changing his environment.
 
I have two on vaccines currently. One is allergic to, amongst other things, soya so we've changed his diet. He's now onto the monthly 1ml injections (he's been on the course for approx 9 months now). He is allergic to grass pollens too and wears a nose net. I don't think I'll see a change really until everything starts to bloom and then I'll know if it is helping.

The other pony is allergic to pine, pollens, alfalfa plus many more. She is jabbed monthly too. She was nearly bald before and very very itchy, to the point where she had then got a bacterial infection on top of it all. She looked a complete state. We have changed her food, which I am convinced helped very quickly, and took her off shavings and put her onto Nedzbedz. She now looks fab. Again, I am waiting for the spring/summer as that was when she itched the worst, so time will tell if she is afflicted again so badly this year. Through research about skin conditions I found that oils and garlic can aggravate, as can sugar, so we cut out the oils and garlic and stopped with anything sugary and I think that this, separate to the jabs, also helped her.

Check back with me in the summer and I'll give you an update - it would have to be a majorly effective vaccine to stop last year's symptoms coming back again!
 
My mare was on Prednisolone for awful itching, but it didn't make any difference for her. I found that you could get it on the internet from bestpetpharmacy or petmeds for between 3 and 5 p per 5mg tablet. The 5mg tablets work out cheaper than the 25mg, just more counting required.

I still have no idea what causes her itching, like you will try anything. I have heard that Feedmarks Equidermis has good results so I think I may try that next pay day!!
 
try contacting Crossgates Lab , if you google it you will get the website , they are fab do allergy testing and herbal / aromatherapy remedys . Cured my friends ponys allergies very quickly
 
I have a horse on the vaccines only a few months in and havent seen great improvements yet she still has lumps all over most days. She is allergic to most feed types, dust, mould and horse flies. She suddenly developed her allergies in October so dont know if the seasons will alter her. The vets say some horses take upto 18 months to respond.
She was on steriods for quite a while and I was told they carry a risk of laminitis for prolonged use.
Becareful with new herbs as sometimes they can make them worse as your horse could be allergic to some thing in them too.
