My horse is doing a lot of rubbing on his face and has ended up with a couple of baldish patches on his face. He gets this every year in the summer but I've always been able to control it with creams. However this year I can't get it under control. I have always treated it as if it is sweet itch but I think there might be something else going on as he isn't itchy anywhere else.

I'm thinking maybe a blood test to find out if he has an allergy, is this a good starting place?

What else have people done to try and work through allergy related issues

This year is definitely a bad year for allergies. Like you I am struggling to get my cob's allergies under control at all. His breathing is so up and down.
When I had him allergy tested we did it from a blood sample. Although it told me he's allergic to pretty much everything so not a huge amount of help tbh!!
Hope your horse improves. It's so frustrating. We were ready for our eventing season but at the moment it's not looking like we'll be out for the foreseeable future.
