Does anyone have any experience with horses being allergic to straw?

My horse developed a rash on his undercarriage earlier this year, I called the vet out and they gave him an injection (for mites, I think) and some shampoo to bath him in. I followed his advice, and although it gave the horse some relief from the itching, it did not help with the sores and scabs.

I then got the vet out for a second visit to investigate further and they took skin scrapings which ruled out any form of parasites. They also issued antibiotics and some steroid cream which worked to clear up the rash and soothed the hardened skin. The vet was pretty stumped and hadn't seen sores/irritation like this for a while (she said it wasn't in the top ten skin conditions :o).

Anyway, having finished the course of antibiotics and cream, I am frustrated to find the rash has once again come back. He is rubbing and biting himself and sores have appeared, which he is quite unhappy about. I have, this afternoon, phoned the vets again to speak to the vet who took the scrapings to discuss the options and see what she thinks.

I am thinking it could be a allergy to the barley straw used in his stable? Does anyone have any experience of this? I am awaiting the vets call and sat here racking my brain :(

Thanks

Horse doesn't have an allergy to barley straw, but I do. I end up all itchy with a contact rash. I could well belive it may be the straw. Have you tried using wheat straw?

I have a friend who's horse also has a rash under his belly, he rubbed it bald and sore. Vet diagnosed sweet itch.

Vet doesn't think it is sweet itch.

Barley straw is notorious for scratching horses. It's the worst straw to use for horse bedding. Change your bedding and I suspect the rashes will disappear too.

Thanks, this is what I am planning to do. I honestly thought it was something eating him, rather than an allergy, but appears not.

Off I go to look at alternatives...
