My horse was diagnosed with an allergy to grass last May, just when he eats it, not rolling etc. His face swells but does go down overnight. After looking at other options i.e.grass glands I decided to have him allergy tested and the test came back as 5/5 on the scale for a type of grass which is quite common. He is on the de-sensitising injections and they seemed to be working but now his face is swelling every time I turn him out, maybe not to the extent of last year but still not great. The vet has said to put him back on the piriton I have used before and that is working (at a rate of 30 a day!) but I can't compete on it.

Does anyone know of any natural products/supplements etc that could help him and be competition legal??

Thank you in advance!!

Contact Jenny Patterson at Calm Healthy Horses http://calmhealthyhorses.com/index.html she might know of something. She is in NZ but very helpful and always interested in cases like yours. Does he do it with hay as well? If not, then could you turn him out on a dry lot and feed hay/haylage? It's a pain, my horse itches when he gets too much grass but he can cope with a bare paddock as opposed to no grass at all, just when winter is over and the pressure should be off!
I just bought a load of cetirizine hydrochloride at a very very cheap price from Pharmacy First http://www.pharmacyfirst.co.uk//med...f-cetirizine-hayfever-tablets/prod_11541.html - will be trying them from June, when his problems begin, a local horse owner who is also a drugs rep said they would be fine.

JillA, how many of the tablets are you intending to feed? My mare has SI and vet suspects a grass allergy too and I was thinking they might help her.

I will start with 2x the human dose and gradually increase to the relevant dose for weight compared with the human dose. IME most anti histamines act fairly quickly so should be able to easily monitor improvement and stop increasing dose at that level, then watch for side effects. That's the plan anyway - trial and error.

Thank you, will try that :) also can't get over how cheap they are!!!!

what grass is he allergic to? Perhaps you could find dry haylage/horsehage made without that grass and turn him out in a dry paddock.

Hi there,
You could look for some sort of 'paddock paradise' livery where they live on hay only more or less?
I've found Thunderbrook Feeds Dr Debbie Carley really helpful for allergy stuff and all sorts of herbs and they are in the UK, and always happy to give advice

Thank you for your comments, he is allergic to red top grass which also has some fancy latin name that I can't remember.

I have ordered some spirulina to try and have emailed the lady in NZ.

He is kept at a livery yard and there is no bare turnout area and not sure he would be very happy staring at the other horses eating grass when he can't. have also found a kind of tonic that cleanses organs and the system so might try that too.
