My boy develops a bit of a headshake in the spring (just about now) which I am pretty sure is a reaction to some form of pollen. He was really bad last year when we had loads of rapeseed planted around our area. I have seen some posts about Piriton and wonder what the dose would be for a 16.1hh horse. And should it be once daily or twice? Liquid Piriton or tablets?

A nose net does help when I am riding but he spends most of the ride snotting through it (yuck) and trying to rub it against his legs.

My chap has allergies, albeit they are not breathing ones, but when I discussed feeding piriton with the vet, he strongly recommened that I didnt.

My other chap I have on loan does have a breathing problem and for 19 years he has been fed various antibiotics and steriods, which cause various side effects. What I have done this year is using a different approach and apply some nasal vapour to his nostrils twice a day, this seems to have worked so far, it warms up and he breathes in the vapour which coat the sisilea (sp) on the upper nasal tract, which stops the pollen from attaching and causing the allergic reaction.

Maybe this would be worth a try with yours.

Speak to your vet, they do give horses puriton but don't think its the same as the human variety. My old TB had to have it one summer due to an allergic reaction to something, vets were not sure what but he was covered from head to tail in lumps.

hi my mums horse gets allergys every year and our vet gave him piriton we now give him the human ones as it is the same as what a vet gives you it is also alot cheaper my mums horse has 15 twice a day they are the 4mg ones and they do work also garlic is very good for allergys aswell

Hey Jane1234, my horse headshakes and it has taken me two years now to get to the bottom of it. She had an endoscopy and was confirmed with alergic rhinitis. I tried all different things from herbal suppliments, nose sprays, vaseline on the nose, ventipulmin and an inhaler to get the inflammation down. Since the beginning of April this year she has now been on Ucerax (similar to piriton, recommended by my vet) and I finally feel she is getting somewhere. I give her 7 tablets (she's 15h) roughly 2 hours before I ride, plus she wears a nose net. Because it's a humans drug, I manage to get it through my mum's doctors surgery for about £1 for 25 tablets, but I'm sure it's probably sold in Pharmacys aswell. I hope this is of some help.
