Just read an old post on here re allum(?) being excellent for promoting healing to lips and mouth.....can anyone back this up and suggest where I might get it? Or suggest anything else other than sudocreme etc?

Cheers x

bitter allum is fab for a cut mouth. you buy the allum crystals from the chemist. you make up a solution ( i would suggest half to 3/4 teaspoon to a pint of water). it is commonly used for bed ridden patients to harden skin off in the prevention of bedsores. it hardens/toughens the skin so skin is less likely to split. i would suggest using a thin snaffle (the top half of a double is perfect) with a slip head piece, wrap the corners of the bit in gauze and soak in the solution then put on for 10 mins several times a day. Whilst it hardens the skin it doesnt harden the mouth in riding terms, just makes the skin stronger.

It's an old fashioned remedy that definately works better than anything else on a cut mouth. It's also very cheap. I also used the wrapping a bit in gauze method mentioned. It works very quickly too.
