Almost time for the second dog... Breed/sex suggestions??

So I did a previous thread on this, but now our female Rottie pup is almost 6 months we are starting to decide what to get next.

I have been told not to get 2 bitches... suggestions on this? Do people really think its a bad choice? Seeing as our pup hasn't had her first season yet, she has not been neutered yet which concerns me with getting a male before this time as we don't want to breed form her. Would we be better waiting until she has been neutered?

Also, breed suggestions? She is very boisterous and obviously quite big already (probably 17-18kg currently) so we were thinking we would probably be best to get something of similar size so that she doesn't bowl a poor small dog around too much, I was thinking a lab/spaniel or similar... We want a nice, trainable temperament but with a fair bit of energy? My main concern with getting another Rottie is being able to walk 2 alone when my partner isn't there. I am 5ft2 and 9 stone so don't want to be dragged along. Obviously we know this is a training issue but do any rottie owners have any thoughts on having 2?

And finally.... Age. We have been given a lot of different views on this. Some people say 2 years older, some people say 1 year - 18months older, some people say get a younger puppy. What are peoples general thoughts on this?

I would wait till she is a bit older, having 2 elderly dogs and losing them at the same time is not fun, my old boys are 14 and a half and 16 and a half and I had my younger dog put down recently-so we will be dogless for a while at some point. I have made the decision that when it is time for one both of my old boys will be put to sleep at the same time-the have been together for over 14yrs and depend on each other for company now they are old.
in future my plan would be to have at least 4yrs between dogs-that way the older one will have matured and know the boundaries and rules and a puppy can have the attention it needs.
 
We are a working couple (although home a few times throughout the day) so we are looking for a companion for our puppy. She is fine alone, I have a camera in my kitchen linked to my phone so I can see all she does all day is sleep but she absolutely loves other dogs and we think she would really benefit with the company of another.
We had always wanted 2, and looking back I do wish we had of gotten 2 form her litter when we got her.
 
I would just have a million rotties. Lol. But in all seriousness why not go with an older male rescue dog. Rotties make fab companions for most breeds they are very easily led lol so make fab companions and often match well with the littlest of breeds as they are happy not playing boss given their size or gentle clumsiness. You could go for an older castrated rottie boy :) we just re homed the most fab natured 2 year old rottie boy from our rescue into a multi dog household.
 
I am really glad you have said that CAYLA, I have always been dubious of getting an older rottie due to having children occasionally in the house (probably sounds ridiculous when we already have one!!) but I do worry because of the size of them and not knowing their past if you know what I mean?
But having said that, ours has the nicest nature! My mum is one of those "anti rottweiler" type people due to a past bad experience and I even caught her cuddled up to Poppy the other day when she though no one was looking lol

Would you suggest anywhere to look for an older one?
 
I can honestly say in all my years in rescue we have yet to have a bad rottie in. There temperaments have been exceptional. We have not had a rottie in we could not rehome with another dog or child. Obs I'm biased as I adore the breed. Of all the breeds I deal and have dealt with they absolutely are my favourite. Bidable placid nature make them ideal companions even given they are a guarding breed. You get the best of all worlds, which to me makes them ideal. I do as it happens know 2 girls who deal with rottie rescue on a big scale? Are you on facebook?
 
Ps as long as you go with a reputable rescue and one happy to come and meet the family and your bitch with your chosen rescue dog then you should get a good match. The boy we just homed was an absolute dream. His manners where impeccable.

Thank you so much, that sounds really encouraging! Our puppy trainer is a bit of a rottie specialist (she has 6 herself) so I will also ask her as she also knows Poppy.

Would you suggest getting an older rottie then or from a puppy?
 
I would go for most compatible but personally given your pups age I would be looking at a male over 2 years unless you could get a decently trained younger male as you don't want 2 teenagers clowning around. It's always better to have a good few years age gap for your own sanity lol. Which area are you in?
 
Thanks for the advice, we are in Kent :) it makes sense to not have 2 youngsters, one is hard work enough!
