I bought a tub of pure 100% aloe Vera gel.
Opened it today and it stinks. A really strong sewage-y smell that is still lingering on my hands many hours and hand washes later.
Is this normal? I've only ever used the stuff from the chemist that is sort of 99% aloe Vera then chemicals to make it easy to apply I guess, this is lumps of plant in gel with no additive.

Lumps of plant in gel? Sounds like you've been sold the mashed up plant! In which case it's not 100 % gel, which is squeezed out of the leaves. I wonder if they've rotted in the pot. AV gel doesn't really have a smell, it's just 'fresh' and 'planty'.

 I'm glad it's not normal to be fair, as it smells awful and nothing should ever smell that bad.
I was expecting a pure gel, not lumps of plant so sounds like I picked a bad one! The gel was really stringy too, bit like egg white ?
Is it worth going for the 100% pure (which seems really difficult to find and really expensive) or actually is the 99% sort of stuff ok?

That sounds like its gone off. Get a refund if you can.

A lot of the clear gel is made from dried aloe vera powder, added to water, and a thickener added giving it a ‘gel like’ consistency.
The inside of the aloe leaf when extracted without the green outer rind, is actually very watery when mashed up. It sounds like youve bought the pure stuff direct from the leaf, but it hasn ‘t got any preservatives in it so has gone off.
