Morning all,
I’ve read on here somewhere that AV juice is useful for hairy cobs with scabs behind their knees....or mallanders to give it its proper name.

I was putting pig oil on Sox this morning and noticed she has scabs...bless her! I’ve found some juice on eBay for £36 for 5 ltr but I’m wondering how much to feed each day. Or is there a better place to buy it from.

Any advice would be appreciated, thanks.

Have you tried rubbing in aloe vera gell? I've been using it (on vet recommendation) for my dog's foot to get rid of callouses that had formed following infection and it's been nothing short of a miracle. It's saved her having to have them surgically removed. I use it daily now just as a preventative to stop them forming again.

The one I got was from Boots and it was £8 for a 200ml tube.

Sorry I've no idea about the juice but I would think you would have to give massive quantities for a horse.

I have never heard of using AVJ for mallenders but I have used it for gut issues. I used to give the Draft mare 2 capfuls of AVJ from Holland & Barrett with her handful of Agrobs Hay cobs, that we called 'her tea.'

25ml a day for ulcer prevention.

I've never heard of it helping with anything else if you are feeding it,.

I’ve used it a little as per YCBM’s suggestion for ulcer prevention. I think it might come in different strengths though because the label on mine says a bigger dose (can check tomorrow if needed but 100ml/day I think?)
It does say it’s a ‘general tonic’ so may help with skin condition?

It needs to be Aloe Vera juice 100% not aloe vera drink.

It is YCBM- it’s the same one you sent me a link to a few months back....will post a pic of the label tomorrow.

Strange, mine doesn't have those dose rates on it, in fact I don't think it has any. I got the 25ml off another supplier. It's always worked for me.

Definitely don’t complain if it’s working! ?

it’s a printed sticker on the back of the container if I remember rightly.

This is the research that says it works. Dose rates is 17.6mg of inner leaf gel per kg bodyweight, which i think works out at about 10g gel for a 600 kg horse. 25ml of juice would be about 25g, which I think would allow for the gel being thicker than the juice. I suspect the supplier is trying to get people to use more!

It looks like either some brands water down, or they are giving instruction to feed more than necessary because it doesn't hurt and helps their sales! I've got that brand now, and I didn't spot the label, and I'm giving 25ml a day to my PRE who was getting girthy, and she's stopped. So I think it might be the latter!

This is the Barrier dosing info, it's more expensive but not a massive problem on 5 litres.

Feeding guidelines

Recommended feeding guide for horses and ponies
  • 5-10ml up to 100kg body weight
  • 10-15ml - 100-250kg body weight
  • 15-20ml - 250-500kg body weight
  • General well being - Feed one measure 3 times per week
  • Run down/lethargic - Feed one measure daily for 7 days
  • Recovering/elderly - Feed one measure daily for 14 days

I've been using an aloe vera gel to help with mallanders, but hes got a huge flare up we cant settle so we're trying the mite injection. I've applied topically and it does soothe them.

I am very interested to know what folk are feeding for ulcers though - he was scoped and treated last year but is still girthy to an extent

Have you tried neem shampoo/oil as that really worked for mine. I followed it up wit farriers M and S cream but the aloe could work too.

We've been managing it with that but he reacted to unmolassed speedibeet massively and we cant seem to get it back to just scabs now just keeps flaring more.

YMBC I imagine you with a potions store, like something out of Harry Potter, you’re so good with herbs and minerals etc. ?

I'll take that as a compliment, thank you. I must look out my pointy hat, two more of me and we could make a good coven ?

Aloe aloe aloe :)

It's been tested in a clinical trial, it works, it's palatable, it's easy to handle and it's dead cheap.

To be sure, I'd go with Barrier, £62 for 5 litres delivered from ebay, feed at up to 25ml every day (not 3 times a week as they suggest). That's 200 days supply for a big horse. But I think I'm getting a good result with the one sold for £35, so I might start with that and double the volume to their recommended 50ml if 25ml if if isn't producing a result within a week.

It must be 100% aloe, juice not "drink", nothing added except essential preservatives.

Hi YCBM this is interesting reading. what is the name of the one sold for £35 and is it on E Bay. do you just put 25mil in the evening feed or split it between 2 feeds? Thanks

There are two on ebay at the moment, search 'Aloe horse 5l' and they will come up. I've used both of them in the past, plus Barrier.

I only feed once a day, in the morning, I'm not sure the timing matters much.

I’ve definitely read it somewhere that AV juice is good for skin problems. I was a bit taken aback when I read it as I thought, like most of you, that it was only used for ulcers in horses.
I’m happy to try it if it would help. I already feed brewers yeast in fast fibre. I may try AV gel first so I can apply it topically onto her scabs.
