Hi

I have a 3.5yr old traditional cob. He threw a splint sometime in the early part of this year, before he was even backed. It caused him no lameness at all and he is 100 percent sound. He is now lightly backed and turned away for winter.

The lump is still there.

Firstly, I was wondering is there anything I can do the reduce the size of the splint? Will it ever settle? It is about half way up his front offside canon bone on the inside.

Secondly, are my hopes of ever showing him at county level shattered? He is county level quality, imo anyway haha. An evenly marked, big and heavily haired and feathered boy with a good confirmation. The splint is just visible past where his feather ends.

Thanks in advance.

Thanks

Mine threw one a couple of years ago, again never lame and it only made itself evident on grooming. It's now almost gone, I suspect re-absorbed.

You can buy lotions and potions, one is called Splintex I think from Global Herbs. You used to be able to buy Radiol Bone liquid but I am not sure if that is available now.

With the first horse, an accident prone TB, it did reduce the size of the splint but it didn't go completely. With the second horse he was 5 or 6 ish and the splint formed over the summer and I didn't ride him much during the winter and it disappeared without any treatment.

I would guess that if you horse is still growing and you give him an easy time it may disappear by itself.
