My boy went lame 2 weeks ago, no trauma happened, just got him in from the field one night, lunged him and saw he was lame. Looked high up so the physio came and saw him, done treatment (said he was sore on bum) and to give him 3 days off, lunged again after 3 days, no different. She said give him abit longer, gave him a further 5days off, no different, so now i have booked the vet for Monday. (vets on holidaytill then) All through this he has been in the field at day, and in at night.

Before everyone jumps on me, he is not lame in a walk, not lame in trot on the straight, not lame on the lunge when he bad leg is on the inside!! Only looks slightly lame when the bad leg is on the outside on the lunge

Surely he would be lame alot more when its on the inside??

He is fine in himself. Farrier has checked foot, nothing wrong, the farrier is stumpted as he is tracking up even on the straight, isnt doing anything weird on the back end, just looks slightly wierd, as i said, ONLY when that leg is on the outside on the lunge

Anyone have any clues? I will hopefully know more on monday but i thought id stick it on here to see if anyones experienced similar? Thankyou.

Sometimes damage in hoof ie collateral ligaments and many of the other small tendons in hoof or coffin joint will show up on lunge on outside leg. I had two years of misdiagnosed lameness from coffin joint injury.Hope its only minor and you have some good news.

My sisters horse had a similar problem and it was diagnosed as navicular.
You should probably seek professional advice.

Yes the vet is coming out on monday. My 8 year old had to be PTS last year with navicular, but he was lame on the straight, and very lame, not just looking odd...

Just recently had very same symptoms with my horse, except lame on the inside in trot on a circle, perfectly fine in every other way. Had xrays and nerve blocks, found problem was from the pastern downwards, xrays showed possible ringbone and very slight navicular changes - but no disease. Flextion test on joint was negative, which suggested it wasn't ringbone 3 weeks rest (no riding, but 24/7 turnout) and rebalancing of foot and shoe by farrier and I've seen a massive improvement. Now on joint suspplement (just in case!) Vet thinks it was possible soft tissue or cartilage damage due to concussion on hard ground, we're walking for a month a mo, then allowed to trot before waiting another month before we canter. Fingers crossed!!

I'm sure your vet will be able to help - nerve blocks and xrays can really help diagnose the problem. Has your farrier seen him recently, when did he go lame in relation to last shoeing?

He was shod about 5 weeks ago, and yes farrier checked his feet this morning. After talking to someone on here and reading up about it im pretty sure its PSD x

similar to shadow's symptoms- but unlikely to be the same - he had a fractured hock in the end. Took 2 x-rays and a scintigraphy examination to find it though.

Are you able to describe what his movement is like in a bit more detail?
My mare can be slightly stiffer on the right side on the lunge and sometimes looks a bit odd in canter on her out side hind leg on this rein (but only on the lunge). The reason being that she is slower to bring it off the floor as it's her weaker side. When ridden, I work her to correct it by straightening her and riding her forward and she's definitely not lame however on the lunge she doesn't have me to working her through it in the same way so finds it harder work. I've found that getting her to move forward on the lunge and do lots of transitions helps her to balance and flex her hind legs, after a few minutes she works through it and is perfectly normal. Must say it really worried me when I first saw it but there's nothing untoward with her, it's just the way she is.

ets should have siad it's the left rein on the lunge that she sometimes finds canter harder as it's her right leg that's weaker and has further to travel on the outside of the circle

mine was lame on circled only, flexions fine, straight line fine, walk fine, but nodding in trot on circle. Turned out to be side bone.

Basically, as above, there are SO many things it could be its not worth guessing. Vet will probably do nerve blocks to find out where it is, and then you can go from there. So many things that cause lameness. Try not to panic as obviously not that bad if only slight. fingers crossed for you its all fine

Good luck with vet

Thankyou for all you good luck and crossed fingers
