The Alter Real stud auction in Portugal is coming up soon and I keep drooling over the lots that are for sale. Would anyone like to lend me money or give me a winning lottery ticket so I can buy them all ?.

I am hoping to actually go soon as looks a lot of fun!

Here's a link to the mares for interest (I'm a mare person!) https://alterreal.pt/en/auction/females

I would love an Alter Real, I'll have Marbella as she isn't spoken for. I used to have lessons on a lovely Alter Real stallion and he was a really interesting horse as he was incrediby laid back but sensitive at the same time. I have heard they are not the best bloodline for a first iberian with as they have a tendancy to be 'quirky' possibly due to nearly being wiped out during the revolution. I have always loved foreign breeds, especially baroque horses and in some of my older breed books they are listed as a seperate breed rather than a lusitano bred by a specific stud.

I have also heard that they can be quite hot, lucky for me there is no horse in the world that can be hotter or quirkier then my old mare (PRE x TB)?.

I bet that was an interesting cross, two potentially hot breeds. I think it probably depends what you want from a horse but I like sensitive and sharp (within my ability range) where as a rider you can just need to channel the energy and then can leave the horse to work but then you can get sharp to mean spooky or naughty. They are beautiful horses and it would be a brilliant experince to see where they are bred. Take lot of pics and do a write up if you go

I will definitely do a full report when I finally go!

It makes a nice cross but not an amateur cross I would say! She is a fun horse and brilliant at dressage but impossible to hack and needs things done in very specific ways ?. My PRE filly is so much easier and more chill!

Wow they’re reasonably priced aren’t they? I wonder how much transport would be...not that I could ride anything like that or do it any justice ?

Eta. am I being thick, they’re just starting prices aren’t they? It’s been a long day, lol

Does Hihena’s movement look very off to anyone else? I’d say not right behind - am I mad?
The walk looked uncomfortable behind, but I watched it with what you said in mind! I didn't really enjoy the ridden work of any of the ones I saw - awfully stompy and overbent. But I know nothing about these horses before just seeing them now, so I'm not one to talk :D I feel like I've gone through some sort of HHO rite of passage, casually dismissing a host of very expensive and well bred horses I couldn't ride one side of :p

With everyone requesting Miosina, she was the first one I watched - couldn't tear my eyes away from her tail :D something about the the shaved dock / low carriage / no movement combination looked mega peculiar - went and watched the others to see if it was a 'thing' haha!

Interested to learn more about them though, going to go do some research.

I have to say I wouldn't call any of them stompey! The action they are showing is pretty typical of the breed it's different from a dressage warmblood. Yes they do come very fractionally behind the vertical but these are 4 year old just backed horses. They are learning balance and building strength and so the head position will alter (either above or below) until they gain strength. I would say the rider for the male videos is riding brilliantly.

The mares are trimmed traditionally which can make them look a bit weird.

That's why I wanted to clarify I know very little about them, that's just the impression I got :) Also found it a bit funny how frequently I read threads waiting for the I Know Best Brigade to roll in and there I was announcing my membership! :D

The tail trimming really emphasised Miosina's low, still tail, but I think that's just her - the others I watched were a lot less... peculiar-looking!

They certainly know how to put a professional Sale Ad together! All those who take dodgy photos of horse heads looking out over stables, or lying down, or rugged etc. etc. should take note ;)
